Midjourney announces full-body ultrasound scanner with 40 imaging modules, plans 2027 SF spa launch
Midjourney announced its first hardware product: a full-body ultrasound scanner using 40 Butterfly Network imaging modules and 2 petaflops of processing power. The company plans to install 10 units in a San Francisco spa location opening before the end of 2027.
Midjourney announces full-body ultrasound scanner with 40 imaging modules, plans 2027 SF spa launch
Midjourney CEO David Holz revealed the company's first hardware product: The Midjourney Scanner, a full-body ultrasound device that uses a ring of sensors to capture vertical slices of internal body composition including muscle, fat, bone, and organs.
Technical specifications
The scanner was developed in partnership with ultrasound technology company Butterfly Network and uses 40 Butterfly Ultrasound-on-Chip imaging modules per system. The device combines these sensors with 2 petaflops of processing power to complete full-body scans in approximately 60 seconds.
The scanning process involves standing on a platform that descends into water through a ring of thousands of transducers. These transducers generate ultrasonic waves and record their reflections as they pass through the body, creating detailed 3D images. About a dozen people have been scanned so far, according to Holz.
Intended use and regulatory status
Midjourney Medical says it is initially working on "body composition maps" that do not require the same FDA clearance level as diagnostic imaging. Various medical applications would require FDA clearances, which the company has not yet obtained.
Holz claims the scanner "aims for image quality comparable to MRI in many ways" and described potential use cases including tracking body changes in response to diet and exercise. The company is positioning the device for frequent use — potentially daily or yearly scans.
Deployment plans
Midjourney plans to install 10 scanners in a spa location at San Francisco's Union Square before the end of 2027. The Midjourney Spa will include a gym, saunas, cold plunges, and scanning rooms equipped with hot tubs.
The company advertises its goal as "build[ing] and launch[ing] the world's first full-body ultrasound CT scanner, ultimately bringing safe, fast, and high fidelity preventative scanning to billions via a magical spa experience," according to job listings.
Data and privacy
Midjourney Medical states that users will create a "library of scans" that can be shared with doctors, AI health tools, or others. The company says it takes "data privacy seriously" but has not released detailed data policies, stating more information will come closer to launch.
Pricing for scans was not disclosed. The connection between Midjourney's AI image generation technology and the medical scanner remains unclear beyond potential use of otherwise-unused AI compute capacity.
What this means
Midjourney is making an aggressive pivot into medical hardware without disclosed FDA clearances or published clinical validation data. The 2027 timeline and spa-first approach suggests a consumer wellness positioning rather than immediate clinical deployment. The viability of ultrasound-based full-body scanning as an MRI alternative remains unproven in peer-reviewed literature, and the company's claims about image quality should be treated as aspirational until independently validated.
