Google Cuts AI Plus Subscription to $4.99, Doubles Storage in Direct Challenge to OpenAI

TL;DR

Google cut its AI Plus subscription price from $7.99 to $4.99 per month while doubling included storage from 200GB to 400GB. The move brings the pricing pressure already visible in markets like India — where OpenAI launched ChatGPT Go at $4.60 last August — directly to U.S. consumers.

Google cut its AI Plus subscription price from $7.99 to $4.99 per month while doubling included storage from 200GB to 400GB, according to an announcement Monday from Vikas Kansal, product lead for Gemini AI subscriptions.

The price reduction marks the first major AI subscription price war move in the U.S. market, following similar cuts in India where OpenAI launched ChatGPT Go at approximately $4.60 per month in August 2024 — roughly one-quarter the cost of its standard $20 Plus plan. Google followed with its own sub-$5 AI Plus plan for Indian users in December.

Google AI Plus, which launched in January 2025 as the most affordable paid AI subscription in the U.S., includes video generation via Omni Flash, Google Flow creative studio, and NotebookLM research assistant. The company also offers AI Pro and AI Ultra tiers at higher price points for heavier usage.

Anthropic has not yet introduced budget pricing in any market, maintaining its standard subscription pricing as OpenAI and Google compete on cost. Both OpenAI and Anthropic have filed confidentially to go public, according to the report.

Pricing as Competitive Weapon

Chi-Hua Chien, co-founder and managing partner at Goodwater Capital, told TechCrunch the announcement signals the beginning of commoditization for AI infrastructure companies, including frontier model providers.

"If you look at the web era, the infrastructure companies were Microsoft, Cisco, Oracle, Northern Telecom, Lucent, Akamai, Equinix," Chien said. "A lot of those companies survived for a period of time but aren't worth a lot today."

Chien argues that Google's structural advantages — vertical integration, distribution reach, and bundling capability — position it to erode margins for pure-play AI providers over time, similar to how infrastructure players were commoditized during previous technology shifts from PC to web to mobile.

What This Means

The move from emerging market pricing experiments to U.S. price cuts indicates AI companies are starting to compete on cost rather than capabilities alone. Google's ability to bundle AI features with storage and other services gives it pricing flexibility that standalone AI companies like Anthropic and OpenAI lack. For venture-backed AI model providers preparing for public markets, sustaining premium pricing while competitors with deeper pockets cut prices presents a significant challenge to their growth and margin assumptions.
