OpenAI Cuts Off Cursor's Model Access After SpaceX Acquisition, Effective November 12

OpenAI is terminating its partnership with Cursor, the AI coding assistant, following Cursor's acquisition by SpaceX last week. Under OpenAI's proposal, Cursor's direct access to OpenAI models will end on November 12, the company said in a post on X.
"We're ending our partnership with Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX," OpenAI wrote. "We know that the people most affected by this decision are the developers who rely on OpenAI models in Cursor." According to reporting on OpenAI's accompanying blog post, the company cited "our experience with Elon Musk's companies violating contracts" as its leading rationale — a reference to years of public conflict between OpenAI and Musk, including a lawsuit that failed earlier this year.
Cursor CEO Michael Truell responded on X, calling the move disappointing and noting that OpenAI models serve only about 5% of Cursor's user traffic. Truell said Cursor is "speaking with the OpenAI team to resolve this" and does not consider the decision final.
The move mirrors Anthropic's earlier decision to cut off Windsurf when that company was under consideration for acquisition by OpenAI, underscoring a pattern of frontier labs severing model access to coding tools that land in a rival's corporate orbit.
Context: two companies now competing on their own terms
A year ago, Cursor was featured prominently in OpenAI's GPT-5 launch materials. Cutting Cursor off then would have been commercially costly, given Anthropic's Claude models held a substantial lead in coding benchmarks at the time. That calculus has changed. OpenAI's GPT-5.6 is now described as a serious coding alternative to the Claude 5 series, while xAI — under the same Musk umbrella as SpaceX — has been promoting Grok 4.6, which reporting characterizes as xAI's first genuinely successful coding model, alongside Grok Bot as a competitor to OpenAI's Codex/ChatGPT coding products.
That shift gives OpenAI more room to walk away from Cursor without ceding ground: Cursor's own SpaceX/xAI affiliation now positions it to lean on Grok models instead, while OpenAI redirects developer traffic toward its own coding surfaces.
What this means
This is not a new model release — it's a partnership termination with a hard cutoff date (November 12) affecting API access, not model weights or capabilities. The practical impact on developers depends on how quickly Cursor can shift its default routing to Grok 4.6 or other providers; at 5% of traffic, per Cursor's own figures, the disruption may be more symbolic than operationally severe.
The bigger signal is structural: frontier AI labs are increasingly treating downstream coding-tool ownership as a competitive boundary, not just a distribution channel. When a tool changes hands to a corporate rival — as happened with Windsurf and OpenAI, and now Cursor and SpaceX/xAI — the incumbent model provider is willing to sacrifice revenue and developer goodwill to avoid subsidizing a competitor's ecosystem. Expect further consolidation pressure on coding-assistant startups to either stay neutral on ownership or accept single-vendor model dependency.
