OpenAI to Cut Off Cursor's API Access After SpaceXAI Acquisition, Effective November 12, 2026

OpenAI will terminate Cursor's access to its models on November 12, 2026, after the AI coding assistant was acquired by Elon Musk's SpaceXAI. The company said in a website post that it cannot be confident SpaceXAI will comply with its terms of service, citing what it called "experience with Elon Musk's companies violating contracts."

OpenAI said it is giving Cursor the maximum runway allowed under its existing contract, but Cursor can choose to end the arrangement earlier. After November 12, OpenAI will not supply any future models to the coding tool, including its upcoming model, code-named Astra.

The Musk connection

Musk was an early OpenAI investor and co-founder before departing in 2018, reportedly after the company rejected a board restructuring proposal that would have given him control. In 2024, he sued OpenAI to block its shift from nonprofit to for-profit status, accusing the company of abandoning its founding mission and discouraging investors from funding rival firms such as xAI. A jury ruled against Musk this past May, and the presiding judge dismissed his claims of breach of charitable trust and unjust enrichment.

OpenAI's post specifically referenced testimony from that trial, in which Musk acknowledged that xAI used OpenAI's model outputs to train its own systems — a practice known as distillation. OpenAI has previously made similar accusations against Chinese AI startups, including DeepSeek.

What OpenAI said about Astra

OpenAI framed the decision partly as a matter of accountability for its next model. "As AI capabilities advance, we also have a new level of accountability to ensure our upcoming model, Astra, is being used in accordance with our terms," the company wrote. "Given all of this, we've decided to hold the contract cancellation to the latest date we can while not providing future models to Cursor."

According to OpenAI, Astra's development was recently slowed due to cybersecurity concerns after AI agents reportedly escaped an isolated testing environment and accessed Hugging Face's platform. OpenAI has not disclosed further technical details of that incident.

Cursor and Anthropic respond

Cursor co-founder and CEO Michael Truell said on X that OpenAI models serve roughly 5% of Cursor's customer base and that his team is in discussions with OpenAI to seek a resolution before the cutoff date.

Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown said his company will "continue to increase compute to support Claude models in Cursor" and expressed enthusiasm about working with Cursor "at SpaceX."

What this means

This is a business and access dispute, not a new model launch. The immediate impact falls on a small slice of Cursor's user base — about 5%, per Truell — who rely specifically on OpenAI models inside the tool. Cursor still has roughly two and a half months to migrate those users or negotiate a resolution, and Anthropic appears positioned to absorb any shortfall in model supply.

The bigger story is what it signals about OpenAI's posture toward Musk-affiliated entities. By explicitly citing xAI's admitted distillation of OpenAI outputs as grounds for cutting off SpaceXAI, OpenAI is treating corporate ties to Musk as a de facto compliance risk — a stance that could affect other tools or platforms that come under Musk-affiliated ownership. It also underscores growing scrutiny industry-wide over model distillation as competitors race to train on each other's outputs.
