OpenAI's Codex for Windows gains Computer Use and remote control from ChatGPT mobile apps
OpenAI has expanded its Codex desktop app to Windows with Computer Use capabilities and remote control from ChatGPT mobile apps. The features, previously Mac-only, allow Codex to operate Windows desktop applications autonomously and enable iPhone, iPad, and Android users to initiate and monitor Codex tasks on Windows devices.
OpenAI's Codex for Windows gains Computer Use and remote control from ChatGPT mobile apps
OpenAI has added Computer Use and remote control capabilities to Codex for Windows, bringing features that launched first on Mac to PC users. The update enables ChatGPT users on iPhone, iPad, and Android to start and monitor Codex tasks on Windows devices.
Computer Use comes to Windows
According to OpenAI's release notes, Computer Use on Windows allows Codex to "operate Windows desktop apps by seeing, clicking, and typing in the foreground while it works." This autonomous desktop automation feature previously launched on Mac earlier this month.
Remote control now works across platforms. Users can initiate Codex tasks on Windows from:
- ChatGPT for iOS and Android
- Codex for Mac
- Monitor progress remotely from any device
The Windows update also adds a Profile section showing user details, usage statistics, and token activity.
Cross-platform expansion
OpenAI first introduced remote access to Codex for Mac through ChatGPT's mobile app earlier in May 2026. The company is now extending that functionality to create an interconnected system where Codex on Mac can control Codex on Windows, and mobile ChatGPT users can access either platform.
The iOS version of Codex continues to receive weekly updates focused on reliability improvements and new features, according to OpenAI engineer Javi. Recent Mac-specific additions include "Appshots" for providing context to Codex and the ability to maintain remote control access while the Mac is locked or sleeping.
What this means
OpenAI is rapidly building Codex into a cross-platform AI coding assistant with autonomous computer control capabilities. The expansion to Windows significantly increases Codex's addressable market beyond Mac users. The remote control feature addresses a specific workflow: developers can initiate long-running coding tasks from their phones and check progress without being physically present at their desktop. However, allowing AI to autonomously control desktop applications raises questions about security and unintended actions that OpenAI will need to address as adoption scales.
