OpenAI Launches Admin Plugin for ChatGPT Work and Codex Workspace Management

OpenAI announced the Admin plugin for ChatGPT Work and Codex on August 25, 2026, giving workspace administrators a conversational interface for managing users, permissions, and usage data without leaving a ChatGPT session.

What the plugin does

According to OpenAI, the Admin plugin allows workspace admins to complete day-to-day administrative tasks directly from ChatGPT Work and Codex, including:

• Usage and adoption tracking: Review activity and credit usage across ChatGPT Work and Codex, identify enablement opportunities, and flag members or groups approaching credit limits.
• Member and group management: Add or remove members, update groups, and handle onboarding, offboarding, and team changes.
• Access and permissions control: Review effective permissions, diagnose access issues, and manage feature or model access by role or group.
• Usage limits and spending requests: Adjust limits for members, groups, and workspaces, and approve or deny spending requests with context.

The plugin operates within existing account permissions, meaning admins can only take actions they are already authorized to perform through standard workspace controls.

Demo scenario

OpenAI demonstrated the plugin through a use case presented by Aarti Bagul, a member of the company's GTM staff. In the demo, Bagul prepares for a monthly AI rollout review by asking ChatGPT Work how adoption and credit usage changed across teams over the past 30 days. She then requests charts highlighting the largest changes, asks follow-up questions for additional breakdowns, approves usage requests, and has ChatGPT generate a presentation deck that gets shared directly to a Slack channel.

OpenAI positions the plugin as a way to automate recurring admin workflows, scale administration using existing controls, and support internal IT operations without requiring admins to switch between separate dashboards and tools.

Availability

The Admin plugin is available now through the Plugins directory in ChatGPT Work. OpenAI has not disclosed pricing details for the plugin separately from existing ChatGPT Work and Codex subscription tiers.

What this means

This is a workflow and tooling update layered on top of OpenAI's existing enterprise products — it does not introduce a new model or change any underlying model capabilities. The Admin plugin follows a broader industry pattern of turning conversational AI interfaces into control planes for IT and operations work, competing directly with dashboard-based admin consoles from Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and Slack.

The practical value will depend on how reliably the plugin translates natural-language requests into correct permission changes and spending approvals — mistakes in access control or credit management carry real operational risk for enterprise customers.
