OpenAI Adds Multi-Account Support for Gmail and Google Calendar in ChatGPT and Codex

OpenAI has rolled out multi-account support for its Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Contacts plugins in ChatGPT and Codex, according to OpenAI DX engineer Gabriel Chua, who confirmed the update on X on August 28, 2026.

What changed

Previously, each Google plugin — Gmail, Google Calendar, or Google Contacts — could only be linked to a single Google account per user. That limitation made it difficult for people who juggle separate personal and work accounts to use ChatGPT or Codex across both without disconnecting and reconnecting accounts.

With the update, users can now attach a second or third account to each plugin. According to Chua's instructions, the process works as follows:

1. Open the "Plugins" section in the ChatGPT sidebar and search for Gmail, Google Calendar, or Google Contacts.
2. If an account is already connected, click the gear icon next to that plugin.
3. Select the option to add another account and complete Google's standard OAuth authorization flow.

Once multiple accounts are connected, ChatGPT can reference information across all of them in a single conversation — for example, cross-referencing a personal calendar with a work calendar, or pulling contact details from two separate address books to inform a response.

Access depends on permissions

OpenAI's plugins documentation notes that connected account availability is still governed by each app's permission settings and, for business users, by workspace administrator controls. This means the feature may not be uniformly available across all ChatGPT plans — access could vary depending on whether a user is on a personal plan or an organization-managed account, and whether an admin has restricted third-party app connections.

OpenAI has not published a formal changelog entry or blog post detailing the rollout, pricing implications (if any), or which ChatGPT tiers have access by default. The confirmation so far comes solely from Chua's public post, and 9to5Mac has not indicated whether this is a staged rollout or a full release across all users and Codex environments.

What this means

This is a workflow fix, not a new capability — it removes friction rather than introducing new functionality. Multi-account support has been standard in email and calendar clients for years, so its absence in ChatGPT's Google integrations was a notable gap for professionals who separate work and personal accounts. The update makes ChatGPT and Codex more viable as a daily driver for scheduling and inbox management across contexts, particularly for freelancers, consultants, and anyone managing multiple organizations.

The dependency on app permissions and workspace admin controls is the detail worth watching. Enterprise ChatGPT deployments often lock down third-party integrations for security reasons, so IT administrators — not individual users — will determine how widely this feature actually gets used inside companies. Until OpenAI publishes rollout details or plan-specific documentation, availability should be treated as inconsistent rather than universal.
