Meta Launches WhatsApp Business Tools MCP to Let AI Agents Automate Business Setup
Meta released a new MCP server that connects AI coding agents directly to the WhatsApp Business Platform, automating account creation, phone verification, and messaging template setup. The move expands Meta's existing lineup of MCP servers beyond ad management and app monitoring tools.
Meta announced Tuesday that AI agents can now handle WhatsApp Business messaging setup, a process the company previously required developers to complete manually across multiple disconnected tools.
The new WhatsApp Business Tools MCP is a Model Context Protocol server that directly connects AI coding agents — including Claude, Cursor, Codex, and ChatGPT — to the WhatsApp Business Platform. Instead of navigating between Meta's Developer Console, Business Manager, API reference, and code editor, developers can now describe what they need in natural language and let an AI agent execute the setup.
What the agent can do
According to Meta, the AI agent handles tasks including:
- Creating a WhatsApp Business account
- Adding and verifying a phone number
- Registering for Cloud API access
- Checking Terms of Service compliance
- Creating and editing messaging templates
- Testing messages and webhooks
- Monitoring for silent failures in Terms of Service, payment methods, and Business Verification
Meta also pointed to its existing Meta Social Technologies MCP server, which can be used alongside the new tool to discover API endpoints, search documentation, and troubleshoot errors during setup.
Part of a broader MCP push
This release expands Meta's MCP server lineup beyond its existing tools for managing ads and monitoring app configurations. The company joins a growing list of platforms — including PayPal, Stripe, GitHub, Notion, Slack, Salesforce, Atlassian, X, Google, and Microsoft — that have built MCP servers to let AI agents securely interact with their services.
The announcement came alongside Meta's new AI-focused subscription plans, though the company has not disclosed specific pricing for the WhatsApp Business Tools MCP itself.
What this means
MCP has quickly become the default interface layer between AI agents and business software, and Meta's move confirms that even highly regulated, verification-heavy workflows — like business messaging account setup — are now considered fair game for agent automation. WhatsApp Business API onboarding has historically been a friction point for developers due to its multi-step verification and compliance requirements, so routing that complexity through a conversational agent could meaningfully cut setup time for the platform's millions of business users.

Meta did not disclose usage data or adoption numbers for its existing MCP servers, so it remains a claim rather than a confirmed outcome that this reduces real-world onboarding time or error rates.
