Meta Launches Muse for Small Business, Expanding AI Agent Into Enterprise Software Stack

Meta unveiled Muse for Small Business on Tuesday, extending its AI agent beyond consumer use into workplace software that small business owners already rely on. The agent now connects to Asana, Zoom, Intuit, Box, Canva, and Salesforce's Slack, along with Meta's own ad accounts and professional Instagram and Facebook profiles.

Meta did not disclose pricing for the small business version. The company pointed to its existing consumer Muse app's model as a reference point: free with usage limits, with a subscription tier beyond that threshold.

The launch comes one day after Meta announced a separate enterprise platform that will include a Muse agent, a dedicated business agent, and a coding tool. Meta poached former MongoDB CEO CJ Desai to lead that broader enterprise push.

Momentum from Muse's consumer debut

Muse launched September 8 and quickly climbed to the top of Apple's App Store, according to the company, surpassing ChatGPT in rankings at the time. Evercore analyst Mark Mahaney told CNBC he expects Muse to reach 100 million users within six to 12 months — a projection from the analyst, not a confirmed company target.

Meta's stock has risen 25% in September, though shares pulled back over the two trading days preceding this announcement.

In its blog post, Meta framed the small business version around a specific pain point: "Small businesses have been growing on our apps for nearly two decades. They told us they're short on hours, not ideas. So we built Muse for Small Business to help get work done with the tools they already use." The company says 200 million small businesses currently maintain a presence on Facebook.

Zuckerberg's enterprise pivot

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg called Muse the "centerpiece" of the company's AI strategy at last week's Meta Connect event. The push follows Meta's reported multibillion-dollar spending on AI talent last year, most notably the hiring of Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang, who now leads Meta's AI efforts. Wang's team began releasing models under the Muse Spark family in April.

The timing is notable: Meta's small business announcement landed the same day OpenAI held its developer conference, underscoring Meta's intent to compete directly with OpenAI and Anthropic for enterprise and business customers — markets both companies have prioritized with their own agent and API offerings.

What this means

Meta is a company that has never derived meaningful revenue from selling software or AI subscriptions directly to businesses — its entire model runs on advertising. Muse for Small Business tests whether Meta can convert its existing relationship with 200 million small businesses on Facebook into a new revenue line, using integrations with tools those businesses already use rather than asking them to adopt something unfamiliar.

The real signal is strategic, not technical: Meta is now assembling three separate enterprise fronts simultaneously — Muse for Small Business, a Desai-led enterprise platform, and continued Muse Spark model development. Whether this becomes a genuine enterprise AI business or a defensive land-grab against OpenAI and Anthropic will depend on pricing details and retention data Meta has not yet released.
