Google Vids Opens AI Avatar Feature to Free Users, Reaches 7M Monthly Active Users

Google announced that Google Vids, its Workspace video creation tool, now provides AI avatar capabilities to free personal accounts. The platform has reached 7 million monthly active users.

What Free Users Get

Free personal accounts receive 10 video generations per month, which can be allocated between AI avatars and Veo video generation. The feature launches first in the United States, with global expansion planned for summer 2026.

AI avatars in Google Vids function as digital presenters that can be "re-scripted whenever your message or content needs an update," according to Google. The tool integrates with Google Slides, allowing users to convert presentations into video format. Google Vids can automatically generate storyboards and scripts for avatars.

New Capabilities

Google is adding emotion steering for avatars, enabling users to "fine-tune their delivery of your message to perfectly match your intent." This feature will also apply to AI voiceovers on both free and paid accounts.

Paid users (AI Pro and Ultra tiers) will gain access to AI voiceovers for narrating Slides in seven languages: French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Custom avatars, which can be generated using Nano Banana 2, will support directed actions including walking, talking, and interacting with objects. Users can add items or products through prompt specifications.

Technical Updates

Google removed the 8-second duration limit on Veo video generation, now allowing "generation without duration limits." Veo is Google's video generation model.

What This Means

By expanding AI avatars to free users, Google is democratizing video creation tools that previously required paid subscriptions. The 7 million monthly active user milestone indicates significant adoption of AI-powered video tools in the Workspace ecosystem. The move puts pressure on competing video creation platforms to match these capabilities at the free tier, while the unlimited Veo generation duration addresses a key constraint for professional use cases.
