Google released a native macOS app for its Gemini AI assistant on Wednesday, one day after launching a Windows version.

The app requires macOS 15 (Sequoia) or later and is available in all countries and languages where Gemini is supported. Users can access the chatbot via keyboard shortcuts: Option+Space opens a mini chat window, while Option+Shift+Space opens the full Gemini interface. Both shortcuts are customizable in settings.

Screen sharing and file analysis

The macOS app allows users to share anything visible on their screen with Gemini, including images, documents, data, and code stored locally. The app can analyze full web pages beyond what's currently displayed on screen.

According to Google, the app includes image generation via Nano Banana and video generation through Veo.

Desktop assistant roadmap

"We're building the foundation for a truly personal, proactive and powerful desktop assistant, with more news to share in the coming months," wrote Michael Friedman, group product manager for the Gemini app, in a blog post.

The timing is notable as Apple's generative AI-powered Siri overhaul is expected to debut at WWDC in June 2025. Apple's redesigned assistant, which will have deep macOS app integration, is powered by Gemini models according to previous reports.

What this means

Google is positioning Gemini as a cross-platform desktop assistant ahead of Apple's own AI assistant upgrade. The native app approach—versus web-only access—suggests Google is prioritizing deeper system integration and faster performance. The screen sharing and local file analysis features put Gemini in direct competition with emerging desktop AI tools, though pricing and API access details for these desktop features remain undisclosed.
