Google launches Gmail Live voice search for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, expands AI Inbox to AI Plus
Google announced two significant Gmail updates at I/O 2026: Gmail Live, a voice-activated search feature, and the expansion of AI Inbox to lower subscription tiers.
Gmail Live voice search
Gmail Live brings Gemini Live's conversational interface to email search. The feature displays a fullscreen waveform interface on mobile devices, accessed through a waveform icon in the search bar. Users can phrase questions naturally, with support for follow-up queries and topic switching within the same conversation session.
The feature shows real-time transcripts of both user queries and Gmail's responses. Controls include a mute button for the microphone and an exit option.
Gmail Live will roll out to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the United States this summer, supporting English language queries on Android and iOS platforms. Pricing for these subscription tiers was not disclosed in the announcement.
AI Inbox expansion and new features
Previously limited to AI Ultra subscribers, AI Inbox is now available to AI Plus and AI Pro tier customers. The feature organizes emails into "Suggested to-dos" and "Topics to catch up on" rather than displaying individual messages chronologically.
On web interfaces, AI Inbox appears below the standard Inbox in the side panel. On mobile, it's accessible from the bottom navigation bar.
Google added three capabilities to AI Inbox:
- Task management: Users can mark individual tasks as complete or mark all emails in a topic as read, with the ability to dismiss suggestions
- Direct shortcuts: Cards display links to mentioned Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides documents referenced in emails
- Contextual drafts: The system generates personalized response drafts based on email context
What this means
Google is following the industry pattern of gating advanced AI features behind subscription tiers while gradually expanding access. The Gmail Live interface directly competes with voice-first email assistants and represents Google's broader push to make Gemini's conversational interface ubiquitous across its product suite. The AI Inbox expansion to AI Plus suggests Google is testing price points for AI-powered productivity features, though the company has not disclosed subscriber numbers or pricing details for these tiers.
