Google Gemini Spark adds Workspace editing, gets 50% speed boost, expands to AI Ultra subscribers
Google has upgraded its Gemini Spark personal agent with the ability to edit shared Google Workspace documents, a 50% speed improvement, and smarter parallel source processing. The service is now available to Google AI Ultra subscribers in most regions, with AI Pro access planned for the near future.
Gemini Spark Workspace Upgrades
Google has expanded Gemini Spark's capabilities across Google Workspace apps, adding the ability to open and edit shared documents alongside a 50% performance improvement.
New Workspace Features
The personal agent can now:
- Edit private spreadsheets and presentations
- Read comments on spreadsheets and presentations
- Edit shared documents, spreadsheets, and presentations
- Add images to documents and presentations
- Edit and refine documents through the Canvas panel, including shared files
Performance Improvements
According to Google, Spark is now over 50% faster for long-running tasks. The update includes smarter sourcing that retrieves and reviews multiple sources in parallel when handling complex tasks.
The service also features enhanced notifications that provide more details when user input is required. Google will stop sending mobile notifications for a task if the user is actively working in that task's thread in the Gemini web app.
Availability
Gemini Spark is rolling out to Google AI Ultra subscribers wherever Gemini Apps are supported, with exceptions for the European Economic Area, Nigeria, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
Josh Woodward indicated that AI Pro members should expect an access update soon, though no specific timeline was provided.
What This Means
The Workspace integration positions Gemini Spark as a more practical agent for collaborative work environments, particularly with the addition of shared document editing. The 50% speed improvement and parallel source processing address key pain points in agent usability. The staggered rollout to AI Ultra subscribers with AI Pro access coming later suggests Google is taking a measured approach to scaling the service, likely due to compute costs or reliability testing.
