Gemini app's Personal Intelligence now reads Google Maps searches and saved places; Argon to replace Deep Think

Google is expanding the Google Maps integration in the Gemini app's Personal Intelligence feature so that Gemini can reference a user's Maps searches and saved places. Google announced the change on October 22, 2026, according to 9to5Google. In a separate in-app notice, Google is telling AI Ultra subscribers that Gemini 4 Argon will "replace Deep Think soon."

What changed in Personal Intelligence

Personal Intelligence uses a user's emails, docs, photos, videos, and other data to customize Gemini responses without requiring detailed prompts. Since launch, the "Search services" Connected App has let Gemini access Search, Maps, Shopping, News, and Google Flights and Hotels.

The Maps integration now extends to a user's own searches and saved places. Google's featured example combines this with Google Calendar access to "give you tailored recommendations for your day." For a prompt such as "I have a list of restaurants I've been meaning to try. What's the best spot for after my meetings today?", Gemini checks the location of the user's last meeting and finds saved locations nearby.

  • Access: Gemini references Maps data only with the user's permission.
  • Setup: Personal Intelligence is enabled at gemini.google.com/personalization-settings.
  • Related rollout: Personal Intelligence is also coming to Android Auto this week, per 9to5Google.

Google has not disclosed which plans, regions, or platforms receive the Maps expansion first. No pricing changes were announced.

Argon to replace Deep Think

Following the launch of Gemini 4 Argon, Google is notifying AI Ultra subscribers that the model will "replace Deep Think soon." The notice says: "Switch to Argon when you need deeper reasoning."

Deep Think currently appears as a thinking level in Gemini 3.1 Pro, sitting above High, Medium, and Low. The last update to this reasoning mode was in February.

The brief notice leaves key questions open, as 9to5Google notes. It does not say whether Deep Think is going away because Gemini 3.1 Pro is being retired or because only the mode is being phased out. No timeline for the replacement has been given. This article does not cover Gemini 4 Argon's specifications: its context window, pricing, and benchmark scores were not part of this announcement and are not disclosed here.

What this means

The Maps update is an incremental step in Google's strategy of grounding Gemini in user-owned data. Saved places are a high-signal personal dataset, and pairing them with Calendar turns an open-ended recommendation query into a constrained lookup. That is easier to answer reliably than a generic one. The practical limit is trust: the feature depends on users granting access across multiple Google services, so permission design will shape adoption.

The Deep Think notice matters more for developers and heavy users. Treating a flagship model as the successor to a dedicated reasoning mode suggests Google is folding extended reasoning into its main model line rather than maintaining it as a separate tier. Until Google clarifies whether Gemini 3.1 Pro itself is being deprecated, anyone building on Deep Think behavior in the Gemini app should plan for a migration to Argon but should not assume any API-level change.
