Anthropic launches rupee pricing for Claude in India at ₹2,000/month, its second-largest market

Anthropic has started displaying rupee-denominated pricing for Claude subscriptions in India, addressing user demands for local currency billing in its second-largest market. India accounts for 5.8% of global Claude usage, according to Anthropic.

Pricing structure

Claude Pro is listed at ₹2,000 (approximately $21) per month when billed annually, compared to $17 monthly in the US. Claude Max starts at ₹11,999 (around $125) monthly in India versus $100 in the US, while Team plans begin at ₹2,399 (approximately $25) per seat monthly, compared to $20 in the US. Indian prices include local taxes, explaining the higher nominal costs.

Pricing varies slightly between Claude's website and mobile apps, though specific differences were not disclosed.

Payment limitations remain

Unlike OpenAI, which rolled out Indian rupee pricing for ChatGPT in August with support for India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Anthropic has not yet enabled UPI payments. Users must still pay via card or through Apple and Google's app store billing systems. The absence of UPI support represents a friction point in India's payment ecosystem, where the instant payments network dominates retail transactions.

India expansion efforts

Anthropic opened a Bengaluru office in February 2025 after announcing the move in October 2024. In January, the company appointed Irina Ghose, former Microsoft India managing director, to lead its Indian operations. Anthropic has partnered with Indian IT services firms Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services for enterprise AI deployments.

The expansion hit a setback in June when Anthropic suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for non-US entities, prompting Indian developers to consider alternatives. Access to Fable 5 has since been restored, though Mythos 5 remains restricted.

Market context

India represents a critical but challenging market for AI companies. The country has a large developer and technology worker base, but converting usage into paid subscriptions remains difficult due to price sensitivity. The localized pricing strategy follows a pattern established by other global tech companies seeking to expand in India's vast consumer market.

Anthropic did not respond to requests for comment on the pricing rollout timeline or future UPI integration plans.
