YouTube adds Gemini-powered conversational search for Premium users, Gemini Omni to Shorts Remix tool
YouTube is replacing keyword search with Gemini-powered conversational queries for Premium members over 18. The platform also integrates Gemini Omni, Google's latest generative model, into Shorts Remix to enable AI-assisted video recreations with creator consent controls.
YouTube adds Gemini-powered conversational search for Premium users, Gemini Omni to Shorts Remix tool
YouTube announced two significant AI integrations at Google I/O 2026: conversational search powered by Gemini and the addition of Gemini Omni to its Shorts Remix feature.
Ask YouTube replaces keyword search
YouTube is abandoning traditional keyword-driven search in favor of "Ask YouTube," a conversational interface powered by Gemini. The feature will roll out to Premium subscribers over 18 years old.
According to Google, users will be able to ask complex questions similar to those they pose to standalone AI models. Results will pull from "the most relevant videos across all of YouTube's catalog." The change may force creators to reconsider their video optimization strategies for discovery.
This conversational search differs from the existing "Ask" button available within individual videos.
Gemini Omni comes to Shorts Remix
Google integrated its latest generative model, Gemini Omni, into YouTube Shorts Remix. The company describes Gemini Omni as its "most realistic generative model available" with improved grounding in reality compared to previous versions.
Shorts Remix already received a Gemini integration earlier this year that allowed users to "reimagine" videos with AI. Gemini Omni expands these capabilities with tools that "work with the user's vision."
Google provides examples including recreating scenes in different visual styles (such as a '90s aesthetic) or inserting users alongside their favorite creators. The latter capability raises potential issues around consent and misuse.
According to Google: "The model better understands user intent creating more consistent and meaningful storytelling while also handling complex video and audio adjustments behind the scenes."
Creator protections and attribution
YouTube implemented several safeguards for the Gemini Omni integration:
- Remixed videos will not be published as new standalone videos
- All AI-generated content receives metadata labeling it as such
- Remixed videos include links back to original source material
- Creators can disable Shorts Remix entirely to prevent others from editing their content with the tool
Pricing for Premium subscriptions was not disclosed in the announcement. YouTube did not specify availability timelines beyond "soon" for the Ask YouTube feature.
What this means
The shift from keyword to conversational search represents a fundamental change in how YouTube surfaces content. Creators who optimize for natural language queries rather than SEO keywords may gain an advantage. The Gemini Omni integration in Shorts Remix democratizes video editing capabilities but introduces new questions about derivative content and creator rights, despite the opt-out controls YouTube has implemented.
