Perplexity moves Mac app and web voice mode to OpenAI's gpt-live-1 for Pro and Max subscribers
Perplexity has upgraded voice mode in its Mac app and on the web to run on OpenAI's gpt-live-1, available now to all Pro and Max subscribers. According to Perplexity, users can work across multiple Computer sessions, start new tasks, and create and manage Projects in a single voice session.
Perplexity has upgraded voice mode in its Mac app to run on OpenAI's gpt-live-1, available starting October 28, 2026 to all Pro and Max subscribers. The update also applies to Perplexity on the web, according to the company's announcement, as reported by 9to5Mac.
What Perplexity says changed
In a post from its Computer account (@AskPerplexity), Perplexity described the update this way: "We've updated voice mode in Perplexity. Work across multiple Computer sessions at once, start new tasks, and create and manage Projects in one voice session. It runs on OpenAI's gpt-live-1."
The post says the feature is available now on the Mac app and web for all Pro and Max subscribers.
About gpt-live-1
OpenAI unveiled gpt-live-1 earlier this year, according to 9to5Mac. The voice model can listen to the user while it speaks. 9to5Mac describes that capability as still impressive after several months and calls gpt-live-1 ChatGPT's state-of-the-art voice model.
Context window, pricing, benchmark scores, parameter count and training cutoff for gpt-live-1 are not given in the report. Pricing for Perplexity's use of the model is not yet disclosed.
Local AI on Mac
Separately, 9to5Mac reports that Perplexity recently launched the ability to run AI directly on the Mac without relying on cloud models. According to the report, this enables an offline mode and privacy-focused AI workflows. The report does not tie this feature to the voice mode update.

What this means
Perplexity's voice mode now sits on a model built to listen while it speaks, which the company pairs with voice control over its Computer sessions and Projects. Per Perplexity's description, a user can run several Computer sessions, launch new tasks and manage Projects within one voice session, so voice becomes a way to direct work rather than only ask questions. The rollout is limited to Pro and Max subscribers on Mac and web. The separate on-device AI option for Mac is a distinct feature from this cloud-backed voice upgrade.
