Grokipedia Resumes Article Updates After Months-Long Pause

Grokipedia, the AI-powered encyclopedia built by Elon Musk's xAI (operating under the entity SpaceXAI), is updating articles again after a months-long stall, according to reporting by The Verge.

In August, Lawfare reported that Grokipedia articles hadn't received reviewed edits since April. The platform's live updates feed is now showing recent changes across various pages, though many entries currently consist of little more than a note reading "recheck all references and sources."

The renewed activity appears recent. The Barack Obama page carries a note saying it was "Fact-checked by Grok" two days before The Verge's report. The Elon Musk page was reportedly fact-checked within the hour the article was being written. But coverage is uneven — the Honolulu page, linked from Obama's entry, was last fact-checked seven months ago, indicating the refresh has not reached every article.

The Verge tested the platform's edit-suggestion feature directly. A suggested update to the "Gears of War: E-Day" page, noting the game's October 6 release date, was accepted and now appears live. A separate request to create an article on Meta's Muse chatbot was logged as "In Review" at the time of writing.

xAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Musk himself has not posted about Grokipedia on X since February, despite claiming roughly a year ago that the project would be "a massive improvement over Wikipedia." However, Benji Taylor, head of design at X and SpaceXAI, posted last week that "we haven't forgotten about Grokipedia" and teased that "v0.2 will be better than ever" — even though a version labeled v0.2 technically launched back in November.

Grokipedia's stop-start update pattern raises questions about how much active human or automated oversight the project actually receives day to day. A months-long gap in fact-checking on a platform positioned as a real-time alternative to Wikipedia undercuts the pitch that AI-driven review can keep pace with a crowdsourced encyclopedia maintained by thousands of volunteer editors.

The inconsistency The Verge found — some pages fact-checked within the hour, others untouched for seven months — suggests the current pass may be selective or triggered by specific triggers (like direct user requests or high-traffic pages) rather than a systematic re-crawl. That's a meaningfully different claim than "Grokipedia is back," and it matters for anyone relying on the site for current information.

The reference to a "v0.2" that supposedly launched in November, now being promised again as an upcoming improvement, also points to unclear internal communication or version tracking at SpaceXAI. For a product whose core value proposition rests on accuracy and freshness, ambiguity about what version is live and when it was last verified is a real liability, not a marketing footnote.
