Google TV adds Gemini visual responses, sports briefs, and deep dives
Google has launched three new Gemini-powered features for Google TV: visual responses that display live scores and tutorials, deep dives with narrated visual breakdowns on complex topics, and sports briefs offering narrated game overviews. The features are rolling out to U.S. and Canada users now, with expansion to Australia, New Zealand, and the UK planned for spring 2026.
Google has rolled out three new Gemini-powered features for Google TV, expanding the AI assistant's capabilities beyond voice control and settings management.
Three New Gemini Features
The first feature introduces visual responses. When users request live sports scores—such as the current Warriors game result—Gemini displays live scorecards alongside information about where to watch. The same functionality applies to recipe searches, where Gemini pairs text responses with relevant video tutorials.
Second, deep dives enable users to explore complex topics with narrated visual breakdowns. Users can ask questions like "What are the effects of cold plunging?" and receive detailed explanations covering health, wellness, economics, technology, and other subjects. Users can trigger deep dives by selecting "Dive deeper" in response options or navigating to the Gemini tab's "Learn" section.
Third, sports briefs deliver narrated game overviews for major leagues including the NBA, NHL, and MLB. This feature allows sports fans to stay updated without watching live broadcasts, similar to the news briefs feature Google launched in 2025.
Rollout Timeline and Availability
These features are currently rolling out to users in the United States and Canada. Google plans to expand Gemini capabilities to Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom during spring 2026, with additional countries following afterward.
Context: Gemini on Google TV
Gemini first launched on Google TV in September 2025 as a limited release for select TCL televisions. Since then, it has expanded to more hardware and received updates including natural language settings adjustments (fixing dim screens or audio imbalances), voice-based Google Photos library searches, and AI-powered style and effect filters.
What This Means
Google is deepening Gemini integration into its TV platform beyond basic voice control, positioning the assistant as a content discovery and information tool. The visual responses and sports briefs address specific use cases—quick lookups and entertainment catch-up—where text-only responses fall short. The strategy mirrors how Gemini has evolved across Google's product suite, shifting from assistant utility toward a primary interface for information consumption. Regional expansion suggests Google is testing demand before wider rollout, a cautious approach consistent with Gemini's broader deployment strategy.
