Google testing Gemini app for macOS with Desktop Intelligence feature
Google is testing a native Gemini app for macOS, according to Bloomberg. The app would compete directly with OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude, both of which offer standalone Mac applications. A key differentiator is 'Desktop Intelligence,' which allows Gemini to view screen context and pull content from apps to personalize responses.
Google is testing a native Gemini app for macOS, according to Bloomberg. The app would bring Gemini into direct competition with OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude, both of which already offer standalone Mac applications.
The macOS app would feature the same core capabilities available through Gemini's web interface: responding to prompts, searching the web, and generating text, images, and code. However, the major differentiator is a feature called "Desktop Intelligence."
According to code viewed by Bloomberg, Desktop Intelligence works as follows: "when you enable apps for Desktop Intelligence you are enabling Gemini to see what you see (such as screen context) and pull content directly from these apps to improve and personalize your experience only when Gemini is in use."
This capability mirrors functionality already available in Claude and ChatGPT's macOS apps. Gemini has also offered screen and camera sharing on mobile devices for several months. What remains unclear is whether the macOS version will enable Gemini to take direct actions within viewed applications—a capability Anthropic provides through its popular Claude Cowork feature, which allows the AI to execute tasks within apps. Google has begun offering limited action capabilities on smartphones, suggesting desktop versions could follow.
Bloomberg reports the app is currently in testing with non-Google employees, indicating a potential path toward public release. The timing aligns with Google's broader AI strategy on Apple devices. In January, Google and Apple announced that Gemini models would power future versions of Apple Intelligence. Apple is also reportedly overhauling Siri into a more sophisticated chatbot experience, likely powered by Gemini's underlying technology.
The macOS app release would represent Google's effort to provide users with a dedicated desktop experience for Gemini, matching the convenience of native applications offered by competitors rather than requiring web browser access.
