Google adds visual automation triggers to Gemini for Home, lets cameras initiate smart home routines

Google is rolling out camera-based automations for Gemini for Home, allowing smart home cameras to trigger routines based on visual events. The AI assistant, which launched in early access in October 2025 and replaced Google Assistant on Google's smart home devices, can now use visual recognition to initiate automated actions.

Camera-triggered automations

Gemini for Home already identifies events like package deliveries and glass breaking. The new functionality allows these visual detections to trigger smart home routines. According to Google, users can set up automations using "simple, natural language prompts to describe the exact event you want to start an automation, and select which cameras should look for it."

The company positions this as connecting "the unbound flexibility of Gemini's visual intelligence with the devices in your Google Home ecosystem" so that "anything your camera can see can now become the trigger that choreographs your entire home."

Performance improvements

Google claims Gemini for Home now handles multiple simultaneous requests more effectively and accepts more casual language. The update also reduces instances where Gemini incorrectly claims it cannot perform tasks and improves understanding of active alarms and timers.

Additional updates

The Google Home app has been updated to simplify adding Familiar Faces and submitting feedback. Apple Music subscribers can again use the streaming service on Google Home devices.

These features are available to existing users in the 19 countries and languages where Gemini for Home operates, excluding Enterprise and Family Link child accounts.

What this means

Google is betting on computer vision as the key differentiator for smart home AI. By allowing cameras to act as automation triggers rather than just passive monitors, Google is expanding the actionable intelligence layer in connected homes. The expanded Google Home Gemini built-in program announced at I/O 2026 suggests third-party camera manufacturers will be central to this strategy. The promised Google Home Speaker announced in October 2025 for spring 2026 shipment remains unavailable for order.
