Google shuts down Gemini CLI and Code Assist for consumers June 18, transitions to Antigravity CLI
Google is shutting down Gemini CLI and Gemini Code Assist for GitHub for consumer accounts on June 18, 2026, consolidating its AI coding tools into a new platform called Antigravity CLI.
The shutdown affects only consumer-level users. Enterprise customers will continue to have access to Gemini Code Assist for GitHub without changes.
Shutdown timeline
- June 18, 2026: Gemini CLI and Gemini Code Assist for GitHub deprecated for consumer accounts
- July 17, 2026: Full shutdown of Gemini Code Assist for GitHub, ending all code review activities performed by the app
Why Google is consolidating
According to Google's blog post, the company is responding to shifting developer needs around multi-agent workflows. "You now require multiple agents communicating with each other to split up the work and solve complex problems," Google stated. "This means your terminal tools need to share a unified backend with the rest of your workflow."
Gemini CLI allowed developers to query and edit large codebases, generate apps from images or PDFs, and automate workflows from the terminal using Gemini 3. Google determined these capabilities would be better served through a unified platform.
Antigravity CLI features
Google's replacement tool, Antigravity CLI, shares its architecture with the Antigravity 2.0 desktop app. Google claims it offers:
- Faster performance
- Multiple asynchronous workflows
- Unified backend with other Google development tools
Google acknowledges Antigravity CLI doesn't have "1:1 feature parity right out of the gate" but maintains it "keeps the most critical features" including Agent Skills, Hooks, Subagents, and Extensions.
What this means
This shutdown reflects Google's strategic pivot toward multi-agent development platforms rather than standalone AI coding assistants. The move mirrors broader industry trends where companies are consolidating point solutions into comprehensive platforms. The decision to maintain enterprise access while cutting consumer tools suggests Google sees the market opportunity in business customers willing to pay for integrated solutions. Consumer developers using Gemini CLI will need to migrate to Antigravity CLI or seek alternative tools within the next 24 hours—an aggressive timeline that gives users minimal transition period.
