Google testing Gmail Live voice search feature for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers

Google is testing Gmail Live on Android and iOS, a voice-powered email search feature that functions as an instance of Gemini Live optimized for Gmail. The feature was announced at I/O 2026 in May and is now entering testing ahead of a summer rollout.

Gmail Live allows users to search their inbox conversationally through voice commands. Google positions the feature as a solution for finding information "when you don't have time to dig through emails." The interface displays Google's standard Live icon in the search field, and tapping it opens a fullscreen experience with the Live feature marked as "Beta."

How it works

The interface displays suggested prompts including "What are my upcoming travel dates?" and "What are updates on my latest orders?" A blue glow appears around the screen edges during voice interaction, with commands transcribed in real-time. Gmail Live processes the prompt, then reads the response aloud while displaying it on screen along with the original email.

Users can mute the microphone or exit back to their inbox using controls at the bottom of the screen. The feature works alongside the existing "Ask Gmail" text-based search bar, which also supports natural-language queries and returns AI Overviews.

Availability and pricing

Gmail Live is currently in testing and will roll out to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers this summer. Pricing for these subscription tiers was not disclosed in the announcement.

Google also announced similar functionality coming to other products, including Docs Live and voice-enabled features in Keep for creating content on the go.

What this means

Google is embedding Gemini Live's voice interface directly into its productivity apps rather than requiring users to switch to a separate AI assistant. By limiting Gmail Live to paid subscribers, Google is using voice-powered search as a premium feature to drive adoption of its AI Pro and Ultra tiers. The move follows the broader industry pattern of integrating conversational AI into existing workflows rather than positioning AI tools as standalone products.
