Google has removed the app-specific limitations on Gemini's Workspace side panel, giving Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, and Chat the same underlying feature set. Previously, generating a document required working inside Docs, and building a spreadsheet required Sheets. That restriction is now gone.

The change is powered by what Google calls Workspace Intelligence, combined with deeper integrations between apps. According to Google, users can now issue cross-app commands regardless of which side panel they're using. Examples cited include asking Gemini in Docs to "send an email to my sales team for their review and feedback" or asking Gemini in Gmail to "create a tracker for this project in a new spreadsheet."

What's new in each surface

• Gmail side panel: Can generate a strategy brief document ("Create a strategy brief for this project with goals, milestones and next steps") or spin up a spreadsheet tracker without leaving the inbox.
• Docs side panel: Can convert a document into a slide deck, with an example prompt referencing a specific presentation style: "Turn this proposal into an easy to read slide deck for my director using @presentation as a style reference."
• Chat (Ask Gemini): Can create documents and decks directly from a conversation, such as "Create a deck outlining Project Zebra with the latest updates."
• Drive (Ask Gemini): Can synthesize content across file types — sheets, reports, and emails — into a single output, per the example "Create a customer insights deck from project Zebra using my project files including sheets, reports, and emails."
• Scheduling: Available in Chat, letting users find open times, schedule meetings, or resolve calendar conflicts from that surface.
• Tasks: Users can log reminders or build to-do lists from any Workspace app rather than opening Google Tasks separately.

Rollout and availability

Google says the expanded feature set began rolling out this month. Access varies by plan:

• Consumer: Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers get the full feature set, though AI Pro subscribers do not get scheduling functionality.
• Business: Standard and Plus tiers.
• Enterprise: Standard and Plus tiers.
• Other editions: Frontline Plus, limited to scheduling functionality only.
• Education: Google AI Pro for Education add-on.
• Other add-ons: AI Expanded Access.

Google has not disclosed a specific date for full rollout completion, nor has it published performance benchmarks or technical details on how Workspace Intelligence routes requests between apps.

This is a product-packaging change, not a new model release — Gemini's underlying capabilities aren't changing, but the artificial silos between Workspace apps are being removed. For users, the practical benefit is fewer context switches: a request that used to require opening a specific app can now be issued from wherever the user already is.
