Gemini Notebook becomes a Connected App, letting users manage notebooks from inside Gemini chats
Google has added Gemini Notebook as a Connected App in the Gemini app, so users can manage and query notebooks directly within chats using natural language. The integration is on by default globally, except in the European Economic Area, where it is off by default.
Google has made Gemini Notebook available as a Connected App in the Gemini app, extending notebook access beyond the side panel where Gemini Notebooks were already available, according to 9to5Google. The integration is available now and is on by default for users globally, except in the European Economic Area (EEA), where it is off by default.
What the integration does
Like other Connected Apps such as Google Workspace or Photos, @Gemini Notebook "allows you to manage and query notebooks directly within your chats using natural language," per the text 9to5Google quotes. Users can:
- Retrieve information from existing notebooks
- Create new notebooks
- Add sources to notebooks
- Save notes
The Gemini app will "automatically detect when to use the Gemini Notebook Connected App for relevant prompts," so users do not always need to invoke it manually with the @ mention.
Example prompts
9to5Google lists four categories of supported actions, each with a sample prompt:
- Create, edit or delete a notebook: "Create a Gemini Notebook about solar farm market trends"
- Add, update or delete sources in a notebook: "Add a copy of this chat to my notebook about Bio 101 course"
- List notebooks and their sources: "Show me a list of all the sources in my notebook about US National Parks"
- Answer questions using notebook context: "What do my Gemini Notebooks say about butterfly migration?"
Availability
@Gemini Notebook is "available to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts." The default setting is on globally, with the EEA as the exception, where the integration ships switched off.
This is a product integration rather than a new model. No model name, context window, pricing or benchmark figures accompany the announcement.
What this means
Previously, working with a Gemini Notebook meant using the side panel. With the Connected App, notebook actions (creating, editing, deleting, adding sources, listing and querying) can be triggered from a normal chat conversation. The example of adding a copy of the current chat to a notebook shows the practical use: conversation content can be saved into a notebook without leaving the chat.
The automatic detection of relevant prompts means notebook context can be pulled into answers without explicit invocation, though the @ mention remains available. The EEA default of off means users there must enable the integration themselves, while everyone else gets it automatically.
