Google Gemini Adds Memory Import to Ease Switching from ChatGPT and Claude

Google has launched a memory import feature for Gemini that eliminates the friction of starting fresh with a new AI service. The feature allows users to transfer memories, chat history, and personal preferences from competing services like ChatGPT and Claude AI directly into Gemini.

How the Feature Works

The import process consists of two parts: transferring memories and importing chat history.

For memories, users visit Gemini's Memory Import page and copy a structured prompt that requests the source AI to summarize key personal information across five categories:

  1. Demographics Information: Names, profession, education, residence
  2. Interests & Preferences: Active engagements and sustained interests
  3. Relationships: Confirmed, sustained personal relationships
  4. Dated Events, Projects & Plans: Recent significant activities
  5. Instructions: Explicit behavior rules and preferences

Users paste this prompt into their existing AI service (ChatGPT, Claude, or others), copy the generated response, and paste it back into Gemini's import interface. Gemini then incorporates this personal context into its memory system.

For chat history, the process differs slightly by service:

  • ChatGPT: Settings → Data controls → Export data
  • Claude AI: Settings → Privacy → Export data

Both services deliver a ZIP archive via email containing exported conversations. Users upload this file to Gemini's import page, and previous conversations appear in their Gemini sidebar. Individual conversations and memories can be selectively deleted afterward through Gemini's settings.

Availability and Limitations

The memory import feature is available globally except in the UK, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area. It works on both free and paid Gemini accounts, but only personal accounts—work, school, and supervised Google accounts are excluded. Users must be 18 or older and have access to another AI service with stored data.

Strategic Context

This feature mirrors Claude AI's recent launch of a similar memory import capability. Both companies are addressing a core friction point in AI adoption: new services start with zero context about users, requiring time to rebuild personalized interactions.

By enabling seamless data transfer, Google aims to reduce switching costs and accelerate user onboarding. The feature effectively lets Gemini inherit understanding of user interests, professional background, relationships, and communication preferences—factors that typically require weeks of interaction to establish from scratch.

What This Means

Google has reduced a significant barrier to AI platform switching. Rather than forcing users to rebuild context through weeks of conversation, the memory import feature lets them achieve personalization within minutes. This is particularly relevant as competition intensifies among major AI providers. The feature doesn't lock users into Gemini—it explicitly facilitates migration from competitors—suggesting Google's confidence in Gemini's quality relative to ChatGPT and Claude. Expect other major AI providers to implement similar import features as switching friction becomes a competitive differentiator.
