Google Cancels Standalone AI Studio Mobile App, Shifts App-Building Into Gemini App Instead

Google has canceled its planned AI Studio app for Android and iOS, according to a report from 9to5Google. The company is instead folding app-creation capabilities directly into the Gemini app on mobile and desktop.

The AI Studio mobile app was first teased at I/O 2026, pitched as a way to "capture an idea on the go and have a working prototype ready by the time you get to your desk." It was positioned as a native alternative to using aistudio.google.com through a mobile browser.

According to the AI Studio team, over 800,000 users pre-ordered the app on Google Play and the App Store — a figure Google cites as evidence that "people are interested in building software on the go." Despite that demand, the mobile app listings have been pulled entirely.

In an announcement shared by the AI Studio team, Google said: "instead of asking you to download yet another app we've decided to take an entirely different approach: one where apps emerge naturally, in the course of your everyday conversations with Gemini." The team added it is "partnering with the Gemini app team to make that a reality on mobile and desktop."

No timeline was given for when this Gemini-integrated app-building feature will ship. The team said work is ongoing and promised "more to share on this later."

The AI Studio website itself is unaffected and will continue development for users who want to "go from an idea to a prompt to a business," according to Google.

What changes for users

The underlying capability — generating working software from a natural-language prompt — already exists in a limited form through Gemini Canvas and progressive web apps (PWAs) today. What's new is Google's stated intent to make this a native, first-class feature of the main Gemini app rather than a separate download.

This is a reversal of product strategy rather than a capability cut. Google spent effort building toward a dedicated AI Studio app, generated meaningful pre-launch demand (800,000 pre-orders is not trivial), and then scrapped the release in favor of consolidating the feature into its flagship consumer AI product.

What this means

This is a distribution decision, not a technology one. Google is betting that generative UI — apps that materialize inside a chat interface based on what a user needs in the moment — is a stronger long-term product than a dedicated app-builder tool. Consolidating into the Gemini app also avoids fragmenting Google's AI consumer surface across multiple apps competing for the same install.

The risk is execution and timing: Google has not committed to a release date, and 800,000 pre-order users who were expecting a native app now have no product to show for it. If the Gemini-integrated version ships with meaningfully worse performance or capability than what a dedicated app could offer — particularly around on-device processing, notifications, or offline app persistence — this could read as a downgrade dressed up as a strategic pivot. For now, the PWA and Canvas experience remains the closest thing available, and 9to5Google notes it "works perfectly today."
