Claude Personal Finance skips model training by default; ChatGPT Finances follows your opt-out setting

TL;DR

Anthropic's new Personal Finance feature for Claude does not use hub conversations for model training by default. OpenAI's ChatGPT Finances, which debuted in May, applies the user's existing training settings, where "Improve the model for everyone" is on by default. Engadget compared the two.

Anthropic's Personal Finance feature for Claude does not use conversations in its hub to train models by default, while OpenAI's Finances feature in ChatGPT applies whatever training setting the user has already chosen, according to a comparison published by Engadget (Jackson Chen, Nov. 7, 2026).

Engadget describes Personal Finance as a new Claude feature that Anthropic announced ahead of its plans to go public at a potentially record-breaking valuation. It is a rival to ChatGPT's Finances, which debuted in May. Neither is designed to provide expert financial advice.

What the two have in common

  • Scope: Both chatbots can answer general questions about financial goals such as buying a house, planning a family vacation or building a savings plan.
  • Dashboards: Both generate visuals for monthly expenses, investments and spending habits.
  • Bank linking: Both require linking a bank account through Plaid, which supports institutions such as Bank of America, Capital One and Chase.
  • Access level: Both have read-only access, meaning they can view data but not make changes.

Anthropic says Claude can see bank name, account name, account type, last four account digits, balances, credit limits and up to two years of transactions. OpenAI says Finances can see balances, transactions, investments and liabilities.

Where they differ

Training data. Anthropic says: "when you chat with Claude in the Personal Finance hub, those conversations aren't used to train our models." OpenAI says "your conversations with connected financial accounts follow the same model training settings you choose across ChatGPT." To opt out in ChatGPT, users go to Data controls in settings and turn off "Improve the model for everyone," which is on by default.

Unlinking. Anthropic says Claude will no longer see data previously provided to Personal Finance once a user unlinks their bank account. OpenAI says that after disconnecting, "your synced account data will be deleted from OpenAI's systems within 30 days."

Ads and products. Anthropic says Personal Finance "has no ads or sponsored recommendations, and it doesn't offer credit cards, loans or savings accounts of its own." Engadget notes OpenAI does not explicitly mention ads for ChatGPT Finances, and that the company has been testing ads for its cheaper tiers as of January.

Roadmap

OpenAI says it plans to add features to Finances through a partnership with Intuit, covering areas such as credit card applications and tax questions. Anthropic says it wants to hear from banks, wealth managers and financial services companies to improve Personal Finance.

Pricing, plan availability and supported regions were not stated in Engadget's comparison.

What this means

The core capabilities are matched: Plaid-based linking, read-only access and dashboards. The practical difference is privacy defaults. With Claude, hub conversations are excluded from training without any action from the user. With ChatGPT, users who want the same outcome must turn off the model-improvement setting themselves. Data removal also differs as described: Anthropic says Claude stops seeing the data on unlinking, while OpenAI gives a 30-day deletion window for synced data. Users weighing the two should check these settings before linking an account.
