ChatGPT Library stores all uploaded and generated files in one accessible location
OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Library, a dedicated online storage system that automatically saves all files you upload or generate within ChatGPT conversations. The feature is available exclusively to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers on the web platform, with geographic restrictions excluding the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK.
ChatGPT Library Stores All Your Files in One Accessible Location
OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Library, a dedicated online storage system that automatically saves files you upload or generate during conversations. The feature addresses a longstanding friction point: users previously had to manually track down files across their computers or rely on chat history to locate them.
How It Works
The Library automatically captures:
- Uploaded files (images, documents, spreadsheets, presentations)
- Generated files (PDFs, documents, and other AI-created content)
- Exception: Generated images remain accessible only in the dedicated Images section
All files are saved without requiring any manual action. Users can access the Library through a sidebar entry on the ChatGPT website and view files in three organizational modes: all files, images only, or general files only.
File Size Limits
OpenAI has imposed specific storage constraints:
- Most files: 512MB maximum
- CSV files and spreadsheets: 50MB maximum
- Images: 20MB maximum
- Text files and documents: 2 million tokens (approximately 8 million characters)
Access Requirements and Restrictions
The Library is not available to all users. Access requires:
- ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or Business subscription (free and Go tier users excluded)
- Web access only (not available on mobile apps)
- Geographic restriction: unavailable in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the UK
File Management Features
The interface provides standard file operations:
- View files by clicking them in the library
- Download individual files or batch download multiple files
- Upload new files via dedicated upload button
- Delete individual files or perform batch deletion
- Reference existing files in new conversations via "Recent files" or "Add from library" options
What This Means
ChatGPT Library represents incremental progress toward OpenAI's stated goal of transforming ChatGPT into a workspace-like environment. The automatic file capture eliminates friction for users who regularly work with documents and generated content. However, the subscription tier limitation and regional restrictions create a two-tier user experience. The 512MB general file limit is practical for most use cases but may constrain power users managing large datasets or high-resolution media. For paying subscribers outside restricted regions, the feature significantly simplifies file management workflows previously dependent on external storage or manual organization.
