Character.AI launches Books mode for structured roleplay in classic literature
Character.AI has introduced Books mode, a new feature that embeds users into classic literature for AI-powered roleplay experiences. The company announced the feature is available now through its mobile app and Labs web prototype, marking a shift toward more structured interactions following legal challenges over its chatbot safety.
Available titles and interaction modes
Books launches with a catalog of more than 20 classic public domain titles sourced from Project Gutenberg. Available works include Alice in Wonderland, Pride and Prejudice, Dracula, Frankenstein, Romeo and Juliet, and The Great Gatsby.
The feature offers three interaction modes:
- Book arc mode: Follows the original narrative, plot points, and stakes while weaving the user into the story
- Off-script mode: Allows users to interact with the world and characters more freely without strict narrative constraints
- TapTale (coming soon): A guided experience with pre-written prompts users can select to drive the story forward, alongside freeform typing
Users can enter stories as existing characters or as their own Character.AI personas. According to the company, "Every book lets you choose who you want to be."
Alternative universe remixes
Books includes functionality for users to rework a book's premise entirely through what Character.AI calls alternative universe remixes. Examples cited include Alice in Wonderland as a romantic comedy set in space, or The Wizard of Oz with Toto as the protagonist. Users can share their alternative universes and explore remixes created by other users.
Access and pricing
The feature is available to all users, including those on free plans. However, Character.AI states that free users will only receive "a handful of free turns" before hitting usage limits. Specific pricing for expanded access was not disclosed.
Context of the launch
The Books mode launch comes as Character.AI faces lawsuits accusing it of harming teens' mental health through chatbot interactions. The company shut down open-ended chat features for minors in 2024 and introduced more structured experiences called Stories. Whether minors will have access to Books mode features remains unclear.
What this means
This represents Character.AI's continued pivot toward structured, content-based AI interactions rather than open-ended chatbot conversations. By limiting interactions to established narratives from public domain works, the company appears to be attempting to create guardrails around user experiences while still offering personalization. The move suggests AI companies facing safety concerns may increasingly turn to bounded creative experiences as a middle ground between unrestricted chat and heavily moderated environments.
