Apple iOS 27 to let users choose between Google, Anthropic, and other AI models system-wide
iOS 27 will allow iPhone users to select from multiple third-party large language models to power system-level AI features, according to a Bloomberg report. The capability, internally called "Extensions," will integrate into Apple Intelligence features including Siri, Writing Tools, and Image Playground.
Model selection across Apple platforms
The Extensions feature will be available across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 when they launch later this year. According to test versions of the software, users will be able to "access generative AI capabilities from installed apps on demand, through Apple Intelligence features."
Models from Google and Anthropic are currently being tested in the system. ChatGPT, which is currently available to users, is expected to remain as an option, though Apple has not confirmed this.
Strategic shift under new leadership
The announcement comes as CEO Tim Cook prepares to step down, with incoming CEO John Ternus tasked with defining Apple's AI strategy. Apple has faced criticism for being "behind" competitors in AI service launches.
However, the company's approach differs from competitors who are building extensive AI infrastructure. Apple's strategy focuses on transforming existing hardware into an "AI-centric experience" rather than developing proprietary AI services from scratch.
Implementation details unclear
Apple has not disclosed:
- Which specific models from Google and Anthropic will be available
- Pricing for model usage
- Whether on-device processing or API calls will power the integrations
- The full list of third-party providers beyond Google and Anthropic
Apple did not respond to requests for comment.
What this means
This represents a significant departure from Apple's typical closed ecosystem approach. By allowing users to select AI models system-wide, Apple is acknowledging it cannot compete with specialized AI providers while maintaining its hardware-first business model. The move could establish a new standard for AI integration in mobile operating systems, where users choose models based on capability rather than being locked into a single provider. However, success depends on seamless integration and whether Apple can maintain its privacy standards while routing requests through third-party models.
