Anthropic Merges Claude Cowork Into Chat, Cuts Product Down to Two Modes

Anthropic is consolidating its Claude product lineup, merging Claude Cowork into the standard chat interface. The change reduces Claude to two modes—Claude Chat and Claude Code—down from three.

The rollout begins today for Pro and Max subscribers and will continue over the coming weeks across web, desktop, and mobile versions of the Claude app, according to Anthropic. Team and Free plans will follow, and Enterprise admins will receive at least 30 days' notice before any changes affect their organizations.

What's changing

Cowork launched as a distinct space within Claude designed for larger, multi-step work sessions that could persist even after a user closed their laptop. Anthropic is now folding that capability directly into the main chat experience rather than keeping it siloed.

Alongside the merger, Anthropic is shipping two new features and integrating a third directly into the chat interface:

• Claude Docs — new document creation and editing capability
• Claude Slides — new presentation creation tool
• Claude Design — previously a separate space for visual work, now accessible from within any conversation

According to Anthropic, users will no longer need to decide upfront which product surface a task belongs in. Context, connectors, and skills used in one conversation will now carry forward regardless of task type, per the company's announcement.

Why Anthropic made the change

In its announcement, Anthropic said the friction wasn't the existence of Cowork or Design themselves, but the decision point they created: "People used both, and told us the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged. What they'd started in one also didn't carry into the other." The company says Claude can now determine what a given task requires without forcing users to pre-select a mode.

There is no toggle or opt-in required — the change applies automatically as it reaches each account.

What this means

This is a consolidation of product surfaces, not a new model release. No new Claude model, weights, or version is involved — Anthropic is restructuring how existing capabilities (Cowork's persistent task execution, Design's visual tools, and now Docs/Slides) are exposed inside the chat UI.

The move suggests Anthropic found that segmenting capabilities into separate named products (Cowork, Design) created adoption friction rather than clarity — a common pattern as AI assistants add more specialized modes. Competitors like OpenAI have faced similar tension between simplicity and feature depth in ChatGPT's interface.

The staged rollout — Pro/Max first, then Team and Free, with a 30-day notice window for Enterprise — indicates Anthropic is treating this as a meaningful UX shift rather than a minor patch, particularly for enterprise customers whose workflows may depend on Cowork's separate, persistent task structure. Whether merging these surfaces improves usability or simply relocates the same complexity into a single interface will depend on execution details Anthropic has not yet disclosed, including how task routing and context detection will actually work under the hood.
