Alibaba's Qwen AI integrates with BYD, Volkswagen and 8 other Chinese automakers for voice-controlled services
Alibaba announced Friday that its Qwen AI model will be integrated into vehicles from 10 Chinese automakers including BYD, Geely, Li Auto, and SAIC Volkswagen. The system runs on Nvidia's automotive chip platform and allows drivers to order food delivery, book hotels, and make payments through voice commands, even with limited network connectivity.
Alibaba announced Friday that its Qwen AI model will be integrated into vehicles from 10 Chinese automakers, marking a significant expansion of AI-powered voice assistants in the automotive sector.
Automaker Partners
The automakers integrating Qwen include BYD, Geely, Li Auto, Changan, Dongfeng, BAIC, Great Wall Motor, SAIC Volkswagen, and SAIC IM Motors. The announcement was made at the opening day of the Beijing Auto Show 2026.
FAW Group's Hongqi brand already integrated Qwen earlier this year in its HS6 plug-in hybrid model.
Technical Implementation
According to Alibaba, the system runs on Nvidia's automotive chip platform and is designed to function even with limited network connectivity. The implementation combines on-device processing with cloud-based computing to interpret voice commands, plan multi-step tasks, and connect to services.
Capabilities
Select models will allow drivers to:
- Order food delivery
- Book hotels
- Purchase tickets to attractions
- Track packages
- Access payments and navigation services
All functions are accessible through voice commands.
Market Context
The rollout comes as Chinese automakers compete to attract buyers in a slowing electric vehicle market. Automakers are increasingly focusing on in-car software and digital services as differentiation points.
Competing AI systems are also entering the market. Audi's China-specific E7X electric SUV, beginning presales May 8, will incorporate AI from ByteDance's Doubao and iFlyTek. Cadillac is also showing a model with Doubao AI voice assistant capabilities at the auto show.
Availability
Alibaba did not disclose whether the AI features would be available in vehicles exported outside China. Specific pricing for the AI-enabled services was not announced.
What This Means
The integration of large language models into vehicles represents a shift from basic voice commands to more complex, multi-step task execution. By partnering with 10 major Chinese automakers simultaneously, Alibaba is positioning Qwen as the dominant in-car AI platform in China's automotive market. The on-device plus cloud architecture addresses a key technical challenge: maintaining functionality in areas with poor cellular coverage, which remains common in many regions. Whether these China-specific integrations will translate to international markets remains unclear, particularly given data sovereignty concerns and the need for localized service integrations.
