1Password launches Claude integration that injects credentials without exposing passwords to AI

1Password has released a Mac integration that allows Anthropic's Claude AI agent to sign into websites without seeing user passwords or two-factor authentication codes. The system injects credentials directly into web pages while keeping all secrets out of Claude's context and Anthropic's systems.

How the integration works

When Claude needs to access a website that requires login, it requests specific credentials from 1Password rather than accessing an entire vault. Users approve or deny each request with a biometric prompt. According to 1Password, approved credentials are delivered through a secure channel and injected directly into the destination page—passwords, one-time codes, and other secrets never enter Claude's context or memory.

The permission lasts only for the current session. 1Password can broker access across multiple websites during a single task, allowing Claude to complete multi-step workflows without requiring new login approvals for each site.

Agentic Mode security feature

The integration introduces "Agentic Mode," which automatically locks down the 1Password vault when a compatible AI agent takes browser control. Only credentials explicitly approved for the current task remain available. Users can see when this mode is active and cancel it at any time.

1Password also analyzes each page after autofill. If a form submission fails, any filled values are wiped before control returns to the agent.

Availability and requirements

The integration is available now to Mac users on business, family, and individual 1Password plans. It requires:

  • 1Password desktop app and browser extension
  • Claude desktop app and browser extension

Support for payment cards and identity information is planned for a later update. The partnership was first announced in March 2026, with 1Password stating Claude would gain consent-based access to vault items.

What this means

This integration addresses a critical security concern for AI agents performing browser-based tasks: how to authenticate without exposing credentials. By keeping passwords out of the AI's context entirely and requiring per-session approval, 1Password has created a model for secure credential management that other password managers and AI companies may follow. The approach limits both the attack surface and potential for credential leakage while enabling autonomous web navigation—a key capability for AI agents handling tasks like travel booking or account management. The Agentic Mode feature suggests 1Password is positioning itself for integrations beyond Claude as browser-based AI agents become more common.
