Google is rolling out Gemini-powered features across Android that enable the AI to understand screen context and complete multi-step tasks across apps, marking a shift from traditional assistant interactions to agentic capabilities. The updates will launch on Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones this summer before expanding to watches, cars, and laptops.

Google released Gemma 4, an open-source multimodal model that runs entirely on smartphones without sending data to the cloud. The E2B and E4B variants require just 6GB and 8GB of RAM respectively and can autonomously use tools like Wikipedia, maps, and QR code generators through built-in agent skills. The model is available free via the Google AI Edge Gallery app for Android and iOS.

Google launched AI Edge Gallery, an official iPhone app for running Gemma 4 models (E2B and E4B sizes) directly on device. The E2B model downloads at 2.54GB and delivers fast inference with image analysis, audio transcription up to 30 seconds, and tool calling capabilities.

Google has launched task automation for Gemini on Pixel 10 Pro and Galaxy S26 Ultra, allowing the AI to autonomously use apps for food delivery and rideshare services. The feature works but is slow—taking approximately nine minutes to complete an order—and remains limited to a small beta subset of apps. Perplexity has released Comet, its AI-powered browser, as a free standalone app for iPhone users. Originally launched on PC at $200 per month, the iOS version joins recently-released Android and existing Windows and Mac versions. The browser combines web browsing with AI assistance for summarization, research, and task automation.

Samsung is expanding Galaxy AI to include Perplexity as an integrated AI agent accessible via the voice command "Hey, Plex." The integration gives Perplexity access to Samsung's native apps including Notes, Clock, Gallery, Reminder, and Calendar, marking Samsung's shift toward a multi-agent ecosystem.
