Apple released Xcode 27.3 beta 1 on November 3, 2026, with GitHub Copilot now available in the Xcode coding assistant, according to 9to5Mac. The Coding Intelligence section of the release notes lists it as the sole new feature in that category: "GitHub Copilot is now available in the coding assistant."

How Xcode's AI integrations got here

9to5Mac traces the progression of AI support in Xcode:

  • Xcode 26: ChatGPT integration, followed by Anthropic's Claude.
  • Xcode 26.3: Agentic coding capabilities added to both integrations, through OpenAI's Codex and Anthropic's Claude Agent. Since this release, developers have been able to integrate AI coding agents directly into Xcode for tasks ranging from writing boilerplate code to updating entire projects based on documentation and file structure.
  • Xcode 27: Support for Google Gemini, plus a redesigned interface, interactive planning and multi-turn conversations.
  • Xcode 27.3 beta 1: GitHub Copilot.

9to5Mac notes the addition benefits developers whose companies have standardized on GitHub Copilot, since they can use that tool inside Xcode.

Other changes in beta 1

Platform and requirements: Xcode 27.3 beta includes Swift 6.4 and SDKs for iOS 27.3, iPadOS 27.3, tvOS 27.3, watchOS 27.3, macOS 27.3 and visionOS 27.3. It supports on-device debugging in iOS 17 and later, tvOS 17 and later, watchOS 10 and later, and visionOS. It requires a Mac running macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later.

Device Hub:

  • Items can be dragged onto a device. Dropping an .app or .ipa installs it, and dropping a link opens it on the device. On iOS simulators, any other file is saved to the Files app.
  • Option-drag now simulates two-finger touch gestures for iPhones and iPads.
  • Keyboard and mouse input is now accepted for simulators earlier than iOS 18.0, tvOS 18.0, watchOS 11.0 and visionOS 2.0.
  • Known issues: CarPlay support requires a physical USB connection (not over the network), and iOS Simulator is not supported for CarPlay. Over Sidecar or a Mac with Touch, only two touches can be sent to the target device, because macOS interprets three or more as a system gesture. The workaround is to turn off touch gestures under Touch Display in Settings.

Previews:

  • RenderPreview MCP tool snapshot filenames and metadata now include applied overrides.
  • RenderPreview MCP tool supports interactive delayed snapshots for macOS previews.
  • Fixes include a crash when building a preview after the workspace closes, excessive processing time for source files with long operator chains, unnecessary preview refreshes when a project had not changed, and a crash when changing code in Resizable Canvas mode.
  • Previews now refresh when asset catalog contents change on disk.
  • The RenderPreview MCP tool no longer reports no previews before they finish loading, and no longer renders a different preview than the one requested.

Testing and automation:

  • Xcode now supports writing UI tests with Swift Testing and XCUIAutomation.
  • XCUIAutomation supports setting the hinge angle on iPhone Duo through a new XCUIHinge class.

Simulator: Fixed an issue where simulator runtimes might be inaccessible to users in the daemon group. Apple notes user accounts should not be added to that group.

Availability

Xcode 27.3 is expected to be released in December, alongside macOS 27.3 and its counterparts, according to 9to5Mac. Pricing is not applicable to the beta, and the release notes give no details on how Copilot authentication or plans work in Xcode.

What this means

Xcode's coding assistant now lists GitHub Copilot alongside the OpenAI, Anthropic and Google integrations described in 9to5Mac's history. For developers at organizations that have standardized on Copilot, the change means that tool can be used inside Xcode rather than only in separate environments. The beta also extends Apple's testing and preview tooling: the RenderPreview MCP tool received multiple fixes and a new snapshot capability, and UI tests can now be written with Swift Testing.
