xAI has released Imagine Image 2.0, a new "Quality Mode" for its image generation tool, and the model lands in second place globally on both major Arena leaderboards — just behind OpenAI's GPT-Image-2.

According to Arena leaderboard data as of August 7, 2026, the faster "low" variant of Imagine Image 2.0 scores an Elo rating of 1,439 in the Image Edit Arena, trailing GPT-Image-2's 1,463. In the Text-to-Image Arena, it scores 1,320, again behind GPT-Image-2's 1,380. Other models — xAI's own Reve 2.1, Meta's Muse-Image, Alibaba's Qwen-Image-3.0-Pro, Google's Gemini, and ByteDance's SeedDream — rank further down both lists.

xAI claims Imagine Image 2.0 beats the "Quality" variant of its predecessor by a wide margin on these same benchmarks, though the company did not publish specific prior scores for comparison.

Availability and access

Imagine Image 2.0 is live now on grok.com/imagine and in the Grok apps for iOS and Android. API access is coming soon, according to xAI; pricing has not yet been disclosed.

Editing tools built for iterative workflows

The release bundles several editing features aimed at production workflows rather than one-shot generation:

  • Magic Wand — modifies only a selected region of an image, according to xAI
  • Segmentation — lets users select precise regions for targeted edits
  • Background removal — exports subjects with a transparent background
  • Multi-Ref Editing — combines up to five input images into a single generation
  • Smart Resize — converts an image to any aspect ratio, with the model filling in new space automatically

xAI says the model is designed to follow instructions with fine-grained accuracy, keep typography and layout clean in complex visuals, and stay visually consistent across multiple generations — a common weak point for image generators handling recurring characters or branded assets.

Templates and a path toward video

xAI also introduced templates that package common workflows — photo editing, product photography, marketing materials, design tools, game assets, and streaming emojis — into preconfigured starting points.

More notably, the company demonstrated a feature that generates characters, locations, and props as separate assets while maintaining consistent visual style across all of them. xAI positions this as a stepping stone toward full video production, saying Imagine 2.0 can produce "consistent visual worlds" that serve as a starting point for video generation. No timeline for a dedicated video product was given.

What this means

Second place in image generation is still a strong result — Imagine Image 2.0 outperforms established players like Google's Gemini and ByteDance's SeedDream on both leaderboards. But xAI remains a step behind OpenAI on raw output quality by Arena's Elo measure, and the gap (24 points in editing, 60 points in text-to-image) is not trivial at this level of competition.

The more strategic signal is the shift toward workflow tooling — segmentation, multi-reference editing, and consistent asset generation across characters and scenes look less like incremental image-model improvements and more like infrastructure for xAI's eventual video ambitions. Arena rankings measure single-image quality; they don't yet capture whether these editing and consistency tools hold up in production use, which is where xAI is clearly trying to differentiate itself from a raw quality race it isn't currently winning.
