X Rolls Out Grok-Powered Photo Editor with AI Text-Based Edits

X has launched an updated in-app photo editor that integrates xAI's Grok for conversational image editing, alongside traditional tools including face blur, text overlay, and drawing capabilities.

Key Features

The new editor enables users to prompt Grok to make edits by typing descriptions of desired changes. In a demonstration by Nikita Bier, X's Head of Product, a photo was edited to appear as if hanging in a museum display. The feature mirrors Google Photos' conversational editing capability, which launched in September 2025 using Gemini.

Additional tools in the update include:

  • Face blur and redaction for obscuring parts of images
  • Text overlay for adding captions
  • Drawing tools for freehand annotation
  • Grok-powered edits via natural language prompts

Context: Prior Restrictions

X previously allowed unrestricted Grok image generation through post replies, enabling users to request edits by tagging the AI assistant. That approach led to the creation of an estimated 3 million sexualized images, including approximately 23,000 depicting children, prompting X to restrict the feature.

Following these incidents, X limited Grok image generation to paying subscribers and removed the AI's ability to generate images of real people in suggestive clothing or states of undress.

Legal and Regulatory Status

xAI remains the defendant in a class action lawsuit filed by three teenagers alleging their photographs were used to generate child exploitation material with Grok. The European Union has launched a second investigation into the platform over reports of nonconsensual sexual image generation.

Availability

The updated photo editor is now available on iOS, with an Android release announced as "coming soon."

What This Means

X is attempting to legitimize and contain Grok's image editing capabilities within a controlled, in-app environment rather than through open-ended post generation. This structured approach allows X to maintain the feature while presumably applying better content moderation filters. However, the move occurs under active legal scrutiny and regulatory investigation into the platform's prior image generation practices. The feature parity with Google Photos suggests X is positioning itself as a competitive platform for photo editing, though the circumstances surrounding Grok's image generation history will likely shape user adoption.
