Perplexity launches native Mac app for Personal Computer AI agent, available to Pro and Max subscribers

Perplexity AI has released a native macOS application for its Personal Computer AI agent feature. The app is now available to all Pro and Max subscribers and replaces the company's previous Mac software.

Native Mac implementation

The new app features a universal keyboard shortcut activated by pressing both Command keys simultaneously, which invokes the Command Bar interface. According to Perplexity, Personal Computer operates across local files, native Mac apps, the web, and the company's secure servers.

Perplexity began rolling out Personal Computer in April 2026. As of May 7, 2026, the company states that all Pro and Max subscribers can access the feature through the new Mac app.

Replacing previous software

The original Perplexity Mac app remains available temporarily but will be discontinued. The company has not disclosed a specific timeline for the deprecation of the legacy application.

Perplexity describes Personal Computer as "an advanced version of Perplexity Computer" designed to function as an agentic AI assistant that can execute tasks across multiple environments on macOS.

Availability

The new native Mac app is restricted to Perplexity Pro and Max subscription tiers. Pricing for these tiers was not disclosed in the announcement. The company has not announced plans to extend Personal Computer functionality to free-tier users or other platforms beyond macOS.

What this means

This release represents Perplexity's push into native desktop applications and agentic AI capabilities beyond search. By requiring Pro or Max subscriptions, Perplexity is positioning Personal Computer as a premium feature, though the actual utility will depend on how reliably it can execute tasks across different environments. The Command Bar activation method suggests Perplexity is targeting power users who want quick access without switching contexts. The server-side component indicates some processing happens remotely, raising questions about latency and privacy for local file access.
