OpenAI Turns ChatGPT Into a Platform: Open Plugins, Shared Workspaces, Slack/Teams Integration, and an Enterprise Market

TL;DR

At DevDay, OpenAI announced a broad expansion of ChatGPT beyond chat: an open plugin platform, shared team workspaces called Space, native Slack and Microsoft Teams integration, workflow automation via MCP Events, and a new enterprise marketplace with 32 launch partners including Adobe, Figma, and Salesforce.

OpenAI used its DevDay event to reposition ChatGPT as a platform rather than a standalone chatbot, opening its internal plugin infrastructure to outside developers and layering on team collaboration tools, workplace integrations, and new enterprise pricing.

Plugin Extensions open ChatGPT to developers

The centerpiece of the announcement is Plugin Extensions, which let developers build interactive panels inside ChatGPT conversations, including custom viewers for file types their plugins support. A new tool called Plugin Creator is meant to simplify development, paired with a revamped submission process and improved directory ranking. Users control which plugins are installed and what access they grant. The feature is available across all ChatGPT plans.

Plugins can also be embedded in user-created "Sites," where team members run the same app against their own data and permissions. Shareable profiles let users showcase Sites and plugins publicly — a move that lines up with OpenAI's recent hire of Patreon co-founder Sam Yam to lead a new creator product division.

Space, Pages, and Slides target team collaboration

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Space, a shared workspace where teams can drop in files, chats, and projects. An AI assistant called Dot organizes the workspace, pulls context from shared material, and hands off tasks to other agents. Space is live now for Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans on desktop and web; mobile support is coming later.

Alongside Space, OpenAI launched Pages, a document format built for human-AI collaboration that supports writing, research, diagrams, image generation, and data visualization with multi-user editing. Collaborative Slides — letting multiple people and agents co-edit slide decks, starting from a conversation or template, with export to PowerPoint or Google Slides — will roll out in the coming weeks.

Notably, OpenAI shut down an earlier shared-chat feature in July, citing a desire to keep ChatGPT simple. The company is now reversing that stance with a more structured collaboration model.

Slack, Teams, and automated workflows

ChatGPT now works directly inside Slack and Microsoft Teams via @ChatGPT mentions in channels, threads, or DMs, without requiring individual licenses. A new Meetings Plugin, launching in beta on macOS for Pro and Business users, automatically generates notes, summaries, and action items inside Space; OpenAI says audio is deleted after the summary is produced.

On automation, OpenAI is adopting the proposed MCP Events Specification, letting plugins trigger actions when something changes in a connected app — for example, ChatGPT monitoring a project board and drafting a plan when new tasks appear, without user prompting. This is available on all plans. Business and Enterprise customers additionally get Team Tasks, which delegates recurring work like weekly status updates and responds automatically to triggers such as new emails or Slack messages.

New pricing: Pro 500, Sign in with ChatGPT, and a marketplace

OpenAI introduced Pro 500, its highest-usage subscription tier, which includes access to an "Ultrafast" mode in both ChatGPT and Codex. A $200/month plan has also returned, though with a smaller API budget than its earlier version; OpenAI says it wants flat-rate subscriptions to eventually match API pricing dollar-for-dollar in quota terms.

"Sign in with ChatGPT" lets Plus and Pro users spend their existing quota across 16 partner services, including Cognition's Devin, Notion, Vercel, T3, OpenClaw, and Dactyl, effectively turning a ChatGPT account into a login and billing identity for outside tools.

For enterprise customers, OpenAI launched a Marketplace with 32 partners at launch, including Adobe, Figma, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Harvey, Legora, CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, and Baseten. Companies can redirect existing OpenAI spend toward these approved partner products.

What this means

This is not a new model — it's OpenAI restructuring ChatGPT's product surface to compete directly with Slack, Notion, Google Workspace, and eventually Microsoft Office. The open plugin platform and "Sign in with ChatGPT" identity layer suggest OpenAI wants ChatGPT to function as an operating layer that other software plugs into, rather than a destination app. The bigger risk is scope: a chatbot that now includes workspaces, slide decks, meeting transcription, workflow automation, and a partner marketplace has a lot of surface area to secure, price consistently, and keep simple — the same complexity OpenAI cited when it killed shared chats two months ago.
