OpenAI Launches $125/Month ChatGPT Business Premium Seat With 5x Usage Limits
OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Business Premium seats, a new tier priced at $125/month ($100 if billed annually) that offers five times the usage of Standard Business seats and removes the five-hour-per-day limit on advanced features. The move comes as Chinese open-weight models increasingly rival closed-source frontier AI on capability.
OpenAI announced a new ChatGPT Business Premium seat tier on Monday, priced at $125 per month ($100 per month if billed annually), aimed at Business-tier customers who have hit usage ceilings on the standard plan.
The Premium seat can be combined with standard Business seats within the same workspace. It delivers five times the usage capacity of Standard seats and removes the five-hour-per-day usage limit that applies to advanced features on the standard tier.
Pricing breakdown
Standard ChatGPT Business seats cost $25/month billed monthly, or $20/month billed annually. The new Premium tier costs $125/month billed monthly, or $100/month billed annually — a $100 monthly premium over the Standard seat at the monthly rate.
Larger organizations still fall under OpenAI's Enterprise tier, which uses custom pricing and includes SLAs, extra security, and access controls not detailed in this announcement.
What Premium actually unlocks
According to OpenAI's help documentation on Business models and limits — which as of publication does not yet reflect GPT-5.6 usage limits — GPT-5.5 Instant use is described as "virtually unlimited" for Business seats regardless of tier. The differentiation shows up on higher-compute models: GPT-5.5 Thinking is capped at 3,000 requests per week and GPT-5.5 Pro at 15 requests per month for Standard seats. Premium seats receive 5x those limits.
Even with Premium seats, usage of advanced features still draws from ChatGPT credits, OpenAI's pay-as-you-go billing mechanism for compute beyond included limits.
Launch promotion
OpenAI is running a waitlist promotion tied to the launch: customers who sign up and add qualifying Premium seats to a Business workspace get $100 in workspace service credits per seat, for up to 5 seats. Only the first 10,000 customers to join the Premium waitlist qualify for the credits.
OpenAI told the press the new tier was introduced because customers requested higher usage limits for "deeper work" on the Business plan, and the company said it expects the $125 price point to be acceptable to that customer segment.
What this means
This is a pricing and packaging change, not a new model release — no new weights, no new benchmark scores, no new API endpoint. OpenAI is testing whether its highest-usage Business customers will pay a roughly 5x premium over the Standard seat price for expanded throughput rather than switching workloads to a different provider or self-hosting.
The timing is notable. Open-weight models from Chinese labs have closed much of the capability gap with closed-source frontier systems, and running one on owned or colocated hardware carries no per-seat licensing fee — only infrastructure and power costs. For a business doing heavy, sustained AI consumption, that math increasingly favors self-hosting over stacking premium SaaS seats.
OpenAI's bet is that convenience, integration, and the absence of infrastructure overhead will keep enterprise customers on subscription plans even as the per-seat cost climbs into triple digits. Whether $125/month becomes a durable price point or a temporary test will depend on how quickly open-weight alternatives continue to close the remaining performance gap on production workloads.
