Notion launches Developer Platform with custom code execution, agent orchestration, and database sync

TL;DR

Notion has launched a Developer Platform that allows teams to run custom code in cloud-based Workers, sync external databases, and orchestrate both internal and external AI agents. The platform, free through August, supports integration with Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and Decagon, and uses Model Context Protocol for agent connectivity.

Notion launches Developer Platform with custom code execution, agent orchestration, and database sync

Notion announced a Developer Platform that transforms its workspace into an orchestration layer for AI agents, custom code, and external data sources. The platform, available on Business and Enterprise plans, includes three core capabilities: Workers for code execution, database sync, and external agent integration.

Workers: Custom code execution in the cloud

Notion Workers provides a cloud-based sandbox environment where teams can deploy custom code without external infrastructure. Teams can write logic to sync data, build tools, or trigger actions via webhooks. According to Notion, users can write the code themselves or have AI coding agents generate it.

Workers uses the same credit system as Notion's Custom Agents but will be free through August 2025.

Database sync and external agent integration

The database sync feature, powered by Workers, can pull data from any API-enabled database—including Salesforce, Zendesk, and Postgres—directly into Notion databases with continuous updates.

For AI agents, Notion now supports external agents through Model Context Protocol (MCP), an emerging standard for connecting AI tools to external data and services. Launch partners include Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and Decagon. Users can chat with these external agents, assign work, and track progress alongside Notion's native Custom Agents.

Notion also provides an External Agent API for teams that want to connect proprietary internal agents.

Custom Agents adoption

Notion first launched Custom Agents in February 2025 for handling repetitive tasks like FAQ responses and workflow automation. The company claims customers have built over one million agents since launch. Previously, these agents couldn't connect to external data or execute custom logic, forcing teams to use third-party automation platforms.

Platform access and tooling

Developers and agents interact with the platform through the Notion CLI (command-line interface), available exclusively on Business and Enterprise plans.

"Any data, any tool, any agent—that's the big picture for the Notion Developer Platform," said Ivan Zhao, Notion co-founder and CEO, during the announcement livestream.

What this means

Notion is repositioning from a collaborative note-taking app to a programmable workflow platform that competes with automation tools like Zapier and Make. By building an orchestration layer that coordinates AI agents, custom code, and live data, Notion is targeting the enterprise market's shift toward automated knowledge work. The move follows broader industry trends of AI companies moving beyond chatbots to build agentic systems that take action across multiple platforms. The success will depend on whether enterprises adopt Notion as core infrastructure rather than just another productivity tool.
