Google Adds AI Study Tools with Interactive 3D Simulations to Search and Gemini
Google announced new study features across Search and Gemini, including AI-generated interactive visuals, 3D simulations, customized practice quizzes, and a dedicated learning hub. The rollout intensifies competition with OpenAI and education startups like Knowt and Gauth for student users.
Google announced a broad set of new study tools across Search and Gemini on Wednesday, expanding its push to make Gemini the default AI assistant for students as it competes with OpenAI and education-focused startups like Knowt and Gauth.
What's new in Search
Students can now generate interactive visuals and simulations directly in AI Overviews. Searching "pH scale," for instance, produces an interactive diagram, and a follow-up question — like plotting citrus fruits on the scale — triggers AI Mode to build a tailored interactive experience.
Search also now generates customized practice quizzes on demand. A prompt such as "Create a quiz with the most commonly tested vocabulary words to help me prep for the SAT" returns an interactive quiz covering science, math, humanities, foreign languages, and other subjects.
In the coming weeks, Lens in Search will add an interactive problem-solving mode. Students can tap the Lens camera icon in the Google app, upload a photo of their work, and receive an explanation of the underlying concept, identification of mistakes, and step-by-step guidance.
Search can also now build study documents from uploaded files — PDFs, docs, slides, and photos of handwritten notes — consolidating them into a single one-pager that outlines key concepts.
What's new in Gemini
Gemini Live now supports multi-step research reports that run in the background. Students can ask Gemini to research a topic, close the chat or move on to other tasks, and get a notification when the report is ready. They can then discuss the findings or ask follow-up questions by voice.
Gemini responses can now include functional 3D simulations, tables, and grids generated specifically for the prompt. A request like "show me how DNA works in 3D" returns a rotatable, zoomable 3D DNA structure rather than a static image or text description.
Google is also consolidating its learning features into a dedicated hub within the Gemini app, where students can start study notebooks, generate flashcards, and take practice quizzes in one place.
What this means
This is a distribution play, not a new model release. Google isn't shipping a new Gemini checkpoint here — it's layering study-specific UI and generation features (quizzes, 3D simulations, research reports) on top of existing Gemini and Search infrastructure to capture student usage before habits solidify around competitors.
The timing — mid-August, ahead of the U.S. school year — is deliberate. Education is one of the few consumer AI categories where daily, habitual usage is nearly guaranteed, and whoever becomes the default tool for homework help and test prep gains a durable usage advantage that's hard to dislodge later. OpenAI has been building similar study modes into ChatGPT, and smaller players like Knowt and Gauth have built entire products around this niche. Google's advantage is distribution: it can push these features directly into Search, a product students already use constantly, rather than requiring them to adopt a separate app. Whether that translates into deeper Gemini engagement — versus students just using the features embedded in Search and ignoring the Gemini app entirely — is the open question Google still has to answer.
