Google expands Gemini-powered meeting transcription to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers
Google has made its 'Take notes for me' feature in Google Meet available to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, expanding beyond its initial 2024 Workspace-only availability. AI Pro costs $19.99 per month.
How it works
The Gemini-powered tool transcribes Google Meet calls and generates summaries that include key action items. Notes are automatically saved to a Google Doc in the user's Drive, and participants receive an email from "Gemini" after the meeting concludes.
Users can activate the feature by tapping the pencil spark icon in the top-right corner on web, or through the menu on Android and iOS. The tool can also be set to automatically enable on every call through Google Meet settings.
Customization options
Users can configure the "Level of detail for recap" and choose the document format across four categories:
- Summary
- Decisions
- Next steps
- Details
All participants in a Google Meet call are notified when the transcription tool is active.
Language support
The feature currently supports eight languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish.
What this means
This expansion represents Google's push to monetize Gemini capabilities beyond enterprise customers. By offering the feature to individual AI Pro subscribers at $19.99/month, Google is positioning meeting transcription as a consumer-grade AI tool rather than exclusively enterprise functionality. The move directly competes with third-party transcription services and Microsoft's similar offerings in Teams, though pricing and feature parity remain key differentiators in this increasingly crowded market.
