Google Maps' Ask Maps feature now widely available in US and India with Gemini integration

TL;DR

Google has completed a wide rollout of Ask Maps, a Gemini-powered conversational feature in Google Maps, to all users in the US and India as of this week. The feature answers complex, real-world location-based questions that traditional map search cannot handle, such as finding romantic date spots, scenic running routes, and personalized travel recommendations.

Google Maps Ask Maps Feature Now Widely Available in US and India

Google has confirmed that Ask Maps, a conversational feature powered by Gemini, is now widely available to all Google Maps users in the US and India. The rollout accelerated this week, with users across both regions gaining access to the feature on both Android and iOS platforms.

How Ask Maps Works

Ask Maps enables users to pose complex, contextual questions to Google Maps that go beyond traditional search queries. Rather than specifying exact criteria, users can describe subjective preferences and situational needs, and the Gemini integration processes natural language input to surface relevant locations.

Google shared example use cases demonstrating the feature's scope:

  • Date planning: "I'm going out on a date tonight and need ideas – no overhyped places. It should be in between home and work, have a romantic vibe, good food, and have a cool lounge nearby for after."
  • Solo outings: "I'm taking myself on a solo date. Where's a good bar within 1 mile that's not too busy? No trivia or live music, dark, booths, good for reading a book."
  • Photography: "I want to take a photo of the NYC skyline. Based on the sun's position right now, suggest a rooftop or park where the sun will be behind the camera, not blinding me."
  • Route optimization: "I want to walk/run from the French Quarter to the Low Battery this evening. Create a route that hits the most 'scenic' spots. Time it so I arrive at the Low Battery right at sunset."
  • Travel planning: "Inspire me with some ideas for my three day trip to Boston. Recommend activities for historical and cultural exploration, authentic hidden gems, and shopping."
  • Reservation logistics: "Find me a place for dinner less than 20 mins from home that's highly rated, has a table for 4 tonight, and an outdoor patio."

Availability and Platform Support

Ask Maps is accessible directly beneath the search bar in Google Maps on both Android and iOS in the US and India. Desktop support is confirmed as coming eventually, but is not currently available.

The feature remains unavailable in other regions beyond the US and India at this time.

Context

Ask Maps was announced alongside Immersive Navigation earlier this month. Immersive Navigation represents Google's most significant update to the driving experience in a decade, while Ask Maps signals Google's investment in conversational AI for local discovery and navigation planning.

What this means

Google is integrating Gemini deeper into Maps as a natural language interface for complex location queries that require subjective reasoning rather than database matching. This positions conversational AI as a core navigation and discovery tool rather than a novelty feature. The two-region rollout strategy suggests careful monitoring of real-world performance before broader expansion, particularly given the complexity of understanding contextual requests about real-world conditions like lighting, crowds, and ambiance.
