Google announces Googlebooks laptop platform with Gemini AI integration, launching fall 2026

Google unveiled Googlebooks at The Android Show, a new laptop platform that merges Android and ChromeOS with Gemini AI features integrated throughout the operating system. The company is partnering with Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo for hardware, with devices launching fall 2026.

Gemini Intelligence features

The platform centers on three core capabilities Google calls "Gemini Intelligence." Magic Pointer allows users to select any on-screen element for Gemini contextual suggestions. According to Google, users can point at a date in an email to schedule meetings or select multiple images to visualize combinations — such as placing a new couch in a photo of their living room.

Create My Widget, also coming to Android phones, generates custom desktop information panels by pulling data from Gmail, Calendar, and other Google apps. Google demonstrates this with a family reunion scenario: Gemini can aggregate flight details, hotel bookings, restaurant reservations, and a countdown timer into a single desktop widget.

Android phone integration

Googlebooks includes two phone connectivity features. Cast My Apps projects any Android application onto the laptop screen, allowing users to access phone-only apps without switching devices. Quick Access enables browsing and inserting files stored on a connected Android phone directly through the laptop's file browser.

Hardware and ChromeOS transition

All Googlebook devices will feature a "Glowbar" light element, though Google has not disclosed its specific functionality. The user interface shows a top bar with time and date in the upper left, app notification icons, and battery/Wi-Fi/Gemini controls in the upper right. An app dock sits at the bottom of the screen.

Google stated that existing Chromebooks "will continue to receive support through their device's existing date commitment" and that "many Chromebooks will be eligible to transition to the new experience." The company did not provide specifics on which models qualify for migration or how the transition process will work.

Pricing and detailed hardware specifications have not been disclosed.

What this means

Google is attempting to unify its laptop strategy after years of fragmentation between ChromeOS, Android tablets, and various Android-Chrome integration experiments. The Gemini AI features represent an OS-level AI integration approach distinct from Microsoft's Copilot+ PCs. The unclear ChromeOS transition plan suggests potential disruption for the education market where Chromebooks hold significant share. The hardware partnership model mirrors the Chromebook approach, betting on ecosystem lock-in rather than proprietary hardware like Apple's approach.
