Google brings personalized image generation to all US Gemini users, expanding from paid-only feature
Google is expanding personalized image generation in the Gemini app to all eligible US users, removing the previous restriction to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers. The feature allows Gemini to access user data across Google services like Gmail and Photos when generating images.
Google has expanded access to personalized image generation in the Gemini app, making it available to all eligible personal accounts in the United States. The feature, which previously required a subscription to AI Pro or AI Ultra plans, now works with free accounts.
The expansion includes integration with Google Photos, allowing the chatbot to reference personal photos and information stored across Google services when generating images. According to Google, this means Gemini can immediately understand requests for images featuring the user or their friends and family based on existing photo data.
Google first introduced personalized intelligence in spring 2025, limiting it to paying subscribers. The rollout represents a significant expansion of the feature's availability.
Access requirements and limitations
To use the personalized image generation and editing features, users must be at least 18 years old with a personal Google account. Users aged 13 and up can access the basic image generation functionality without the personalization features.
The service currently supports 11 languages: Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Turkish.
How it works
The personalized intelligence feature grants Gemini access to user information across Google services, including Gmail and Google Photos. When users request image generation, the chatbot can draw on this data to create more contextually relevant results without requiring detailed descriptions.
What this means
Google's decision to democratize this feature suggests the company is prioritizing user adoption over premium subscription revenue for this particular capability. By removing the paywall, Google positions Gemini's personalized image generation as a standard feature rather than a premium add-on, potentially accelerating integration of AI capabilities across its ecosystem. The move also indicates confidence in the underlying technology's ability to scale across a larger user base without significant infrastructure costs.
