What's Being Discontinued
Starting September 4, Google will begin removing access to Google Assistant across:
- Android phones and tablets
- Wear OS watches
- Headphones paired with Android devices
- Vehicles running Android Auto projected from a mobile device
Google says the rollout "may take a few weeks to reach everyone," meaning some users could retain access slightly past the September 4 start date. Once Assistant is removed from a device, there is no option to switch back — Gemini becomes the only assistant available.
What's Exempt — For Now
Cars with Google built-in (the embedded, non-projected version of Android Auto) are excluded from this deprecation. Google Assistant will continue functioning in those vehicles beyond September 4, 2026.
The announcement also does not currently cover Google TV devices, Google Home speakers, or smart displays. Google says Gemini is coming to those form factors, but no timeline has been disclosed. The company has not clarified when the Pixel Tablet, which is typically used in a docked smart-display mode, will receive Gemini.
A Timeline That Slipped
This is not a new decision — Google originally targeted the end of 2025 for retiring Assistant on mobile, then pushed the date into 2026. The September 4 date now represents the concrete deadline after that delay.
In the interim, users have had access to a "Switch to Google Assistant" toggle inside the Gemini app, letting them revert to the older assistant if Gemining wasn't meeting their needs. That option will disappear once the removal process reaches a given device.
What This Means
This shutdown marks the end of an assistant product Google has run since 2016, and it forces a hard migration for users who have resisted switching to Gemini — there will be no fallback once access is pulled. The carve-out for Google built-in cars suggests Gemini's voice and latency performance in embedded automotive systems isn't yet considered ready for a forced switch, a notable gap given how long Assistant has anchored Google's voice strategy.
The silence on Google TV, Home speakers, and smart displays is the bigger open question. Those are ambient, voice-first surfaces where Gemini's multimodal reasoning could matter less than raw response latency and reliability — areas where legacy Assistant has historically been tuned. Google committing to Gemini there "eventually" without a date signals those transitions are technically harder or riskier for household devices that families depend on for basic tasks like timers and smart home control.
For developers and device makers building on Google's assistant stack, this is a clear signal: any remaining Assistant-dependent integrations on phones, wearables, or projected Android Auto need to be validated against Gemini's action model before September 4, 2026.
