Gmail adds AI Inbox tab to mobile bottom bar, expands Help me write with Drive integration

Gmail for Android and iOS now includes AI Inbox as a dedicated tab in the bottom navigation bar, positioned between Gmail and Chat in a four-tab layout with Meet.

AI Inbox mobile interface

The feature appears in two locations: the navigation drawer below Inbox and the bottom bar. The interface mirrors the desktop web version, displaying a greeting with recap counts for to-dos and topics, followed by "Suggested to-dos" and "Topics to catch up on" sections.

AI Inbox is currently available in beta for Google AI Ultra subscribers only.

Help me write gains contextual capabilities

Google updated Help me write with two new capabilities:

Topic contextualization: The feature now connects to Google Drive and Gmail based on user prompts, automatically inserting relevant information from these sources into email drafts. This eliminates manual switching between apps to locate specific details.

Tone and style personalization: Help me write can now match the tone and style of previously written emails when generating drafts.

According to Google, use cases include customer inquiries, progress reports to leadership, team announcements, partnership exploration, grant proposals, and teacher-parent communications.

Availability

The Help me write update is available to:

  • Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers
  • Business: Starter, Standard, and Plus tiers
  • Enterprise: Starter, Standard, and Plus tiers
  • Education: Google AI Pro for Education add-on

What this means

Google is positioning AI Inbox as the primary interface for Gmail, giving it equal prominence to the traditional inbox on mobile. The Drive integration for Help me write represents a shift toward cross-application context retrieval, reducing manual data gathering for email composition. However, the feature remains limited to paid Google AI tiers, indicating Google's strategy to monetize AI capabilities rather than offering them universally to Workspace users.
