Google brings Gemini Spark AI agent to macOS app for local file management and automation
Google has released Gemini Spark for its macOS desktop app in version 1.80.15, marking the first major desktop update announced at I/O 2026. The AI agent can now access local files and automate workflows directly on users' computers.
Local file access replaces remote browser approach
Gemini Spark previously operated through a remote browser with code execution capabilities. The macOS app integration allows the AI agent to work with local files and automate desktop workflows without cloud intermediaries.
Users can select which folders Gemini Spark can access through a "Connected folders" permission system. The agent can organize files, group them by type or context, and create folder structures after presenting an organization plan for user approval. Another capability includes converting local files into Google Docs format.
Technical implementation and controls
The update adds a "Spark" tab to the macOS app's sidebar, matching the web interface. Version 1.80.15 is rolling out through the built-in updater system.
New settings controls include:
- Keep Mac awake while running tasks (prevents sleep during active Gemini app sessions)
- Alert when backup fails (enabled by default, requests approval before continuing tasks when file backups fail)
- Connected folder management with ability to unlink access
- Customizable Schedules and Skills
- Usage limits page accessible from account menu
The usage limits page, previously opening gemini.google.com/usage in a browser, now appears directly in the app interface.
What this means
Gemini Spark's local execution capabilities represent a shift from cloud-based AI agents to on-device automation. The folder permission system and backup failure alerts suggest Google is prioritizing user control and data safety as AI agents gain direct file system access. This positions Gemini Spark as infrastructure for desktop workflow automation rather than a chat interface.
Google indicated a second major desktop update—a new voice experience—is scheduled for this summer. The rollout follows the pattern of gradual feature deployment to desktop apps after web-based previews.
